My rig is pretty big (at least heightwise and in the sub department) and even at lower volumes... you get an authority in the low end from subs completely missing from a putsy 210 (yeah I know there are some full range 210s...but a lot are not)
A lot of PA systems at smaller bars don't have subs, and I really think people are not used to how a bass guitar can really sound and feel and its an important part of my bands sound.
It really is exciting to have the stage vibrating and that power coming up into you. Maybe childish - but to me rock should be about primal power (for better or worse).
Ask your audience - I check with friends after shows as to how it sounded and felt (too loud? good mix?), and with the rest of band. You are helping to create an experience with them and I think evidence will there if one is off errrrr....base. Kick drum can become an issue though....at higher volumes seems to be the first drum to loose its impact and generally needs micing.
