When do you think a matching headstock does not look good?

I hate matching headstocks with maple fretboards, unless it has black block inlays

I generally don't like painted headstocks on bolt on necks, especially with maple boards. In some cases I might make an exception for a black headstock (i.e. black headstock with dark fretboard and inca silver body), but in almost all other cases they are a reason for me not to buy a bass, no matter how much I like it otherwise.

When do you think a matching headstock does not look good on a bass?

I guess it just depends on the bass. TBH, this is something I've never really thought about; if I want a particular bass? A color matching headstock (or not) has never consciously been a factor. My two Ricks - a 4001 and a 4003 - have color matching headstocks; but AFAIK, Rick basses have always had color-matching headstocks. And so does my Rick 330 guitar... The only other bass I have like that, is a Lexus Pearl White '06 Carvin LB-20. With it's Ebony fretboard, though, it would look a little... unfinished, if it didn't. So, like I said; I think it just depends on the particular bass...

I agree... A rick with a non matching headstock would seem off just like a old fender with a matching headstock would seem off. Carvin's would seem good either way because it was a option.

Burst painted headstocks, and the dreaded CherryBurst with maple neck and matching headstock.
Art is subjective obviously, but I have no idea why people don't like it. I guess it's like I don't really care for pastel/shell pink basses and they're real popular now. But if I did get one it'd have a matched headstock

I was thinking about this thread last night while I was playing my Crafter Thinline acoustic (not bass, I know)

That has a matching headstock but since the color is a god awful dog turd brown I'm not the biggest fan of that. It's a great guitar that I got a killer deal on so for once I had to overlook it. My arthritic hands were not enjoying my jumbo Hohner acoustic anymore. Our guitarist got what he thought was a great deal on the Taylor version and passed along that fortune to me. Love the guitar, hate the color.

But I have to say I like the gloss finish and binding on the Crafter that his Taylor doesn't have.

I would never want a sunburst headstock to go with a sunburst bass.

I've just acquired a Yamaha TRBX174EW in "Tobacco Brown Sunburst" with a matching headstock.

I LOVE IT! (It's a beauty for only $300CAD/$220USD brand new. )

Congrats, looks great to me! Some people said they don't like the idea of burst finishes with matching headstocks, it's one of my favorite things.
