when is it "enough"?

it is never enough for me, even though i only have two. i have a hard time parting with things, so i will never get rid of any bass i have. i plan on getting a couple more soon, a friend is giving me his old warlock bass, which im gonna customize. and im also looking into a fretless 4 string, or a 6 string
I just bought my 7th bass & I SWEAR TO GOD this is the last one.

GAS is so incurable. I have started photography some years ago and it's the same. There is always one more lens to lust after...
I guess I can't bear the thought that the problem is not the gear...
That aside, it's fun and if you know your stuff you can have a lot of it without losing (even gaining) money.

I've got more basses than I need. When i get bored with one, I play another. if I sold some on, I'd lose lots of dough on them.
Trouble is, it could be said - in fact marcus Miller did say something along the lines of.................if you only play one bass, you get to know it intimately - every nook and cranny, every dead spot and wolf note.
Most 'name' bass players make their name with one or two basses.

I stopped after I had one of every 'type' of bass I wanted, so I have a 4 string fretted (Zon), a 4 string fretless (Tobais), a 5 string fretted (MM SR) and an 8 string (octave tuned Hamer). This has worked fine for me for sometime, but as I am doing more studio recording I am find the desire for a couple more, lol - a Fender Jazz and Precision

When is it enough... I'll give my life story. I was a bassaholic from '95-'05. Went through 8 different basses. I have no doubt I would still be GASing now, if not for:
1. New, more expensive hobby (mountain biking - man you can dump alot into that sport)
2. Two kids, with looming college fund even though they are just 4 and 2
3. And... finding a bass that I REALLY like. Find a finely-crafter instrument that you can find no real faults with and add in #1 and #2 above and the GAS drops enough to ignore.
Sure, I still look at the classifieds. I *am* toying with the idea of a new amp/cab, though similiar story their with #1, #2 and a nice Eden 212 Combo that rocks the house well enough. But, in the end, I don't feel the pull I did before. The bass that finally did it for me? A 4 string (yep, been down 5 and 6 string alley also) Peavey USA Millenium. Kickas$ bass. It's the only bass still left in my arsenal and I still practice/gig an average of 5 hours a week.
I personally say never man. Yeah, I only own 2 basses right now (but I'm only 14 with no stable income, just spare cash for doing odd jobs around town, like mowing or refing soccor), but I'm one of the biggest gear whores ever. I've got some serious professional level gear, that are all tour worthy (Ibanez BTB with will soon be sold to fund my next bass, Peavey Cirrus, Ampeg BA-115). I LOVE my Cirrus, it really gets my sound, and the BA-115 sounds great to, but I still understand that there are other (better) amps that will help get the real sound that I want, and a large amount of basses, to really nail everything. And then different basses for different things.
Yeah, I'm gonna want a fretless (that will probably be my next expense, maybe a fretless Cirrus). Maybe I'll want a six string eventaully. An acoustic bass. And upright. A custom jazz 5. A MM style bass. They are all there for different reasons, you might as well buy them and put them to good use

I would like to know how many Ps and Thunderbirds John Entwistle had in his collection when he passed away.
Let's see...here's my "plan":
I've got my 5-string Fretted (Ken Lawrence Associate 5), and that's the only bass I really need, for like...survival and staying sane.
Then I've got my 4-string fretted (DeArmond Pilot Deluxe 4), which I'll eventually upgrade the pickups/electronics and then I won't need any more 4-string fretted basses. I don't play 4-strings much anyways.
Then I've got my Stambaugh custom 6-string being built, and that should take care of any 6-string/ERB needs I have.
As far as fretless, someday I'll get a Rob Allen 5-string fretless (the ultimate fretless bass, imo).
And that's my short list of planned basses. Then there's an Epifani 4x10 cab (to go with my 1x15) and an Epifani amp to round out my perfect rig.
Then *maybe* I'll think about getting a double bass, but I'm waiting until I get my electric needs fully fulfilled before I start sinking money into that black hole
But then again - I'd still really like to try an MTD, Ritter, Jerzy Drozd, Ken Smith, Ken Lawrence Chamberbrase, Azola EUB, Bassline Worp, and some others.

I have actually been threatened with termination at a job before because I spend too much time on Ebay. I have yet to buy a Bass on Ebay, but pedals, mics, cabs, keyboards etc....
I had to quit thinking about URB. I had a chinese one for a while, but the tone was awful. To get a decent URB starts at $3000, and the sky is the limit. I was actually looking at an $11k flatback (beautiful scroll) and trying to rationalize maxing out my credit. Then I pulled back from the brink. I'm an electric player until I get a major gig, or a 6 figure straight job.

Since I have had to give up more than a few instruments, she says that maybe that explains why I have so many guitars, basses, and amps now. She cannot explain her collection of pillows.
We can all rationalize it a hundred different ways, but in the end, it all comes down to two words. Ooooooh, shiny!
In short, when is it enough? When I'm dead.
I've known for a while that the ideal bass for me is a 4-string with frets and passive electronics. But I still used to have 12 basses, including 5- and 6-strings and a fretless, just 'cause it was fun to collect them. At some point, with most of them sitting around unplayed, it became not fun anymore. That's when it was "enough", and I started focusing on finding the three or four ideal basses for me. I've got four right now and I'm planning on adding a Fender CS '64 Jazz next year. My current rule is, "Don't buy it unless you really think it's going to be your main bass." Right now, nothing is going to dislodge the Reverends from the top spot, so I'm G.A.S.-free.
