Need some advice from the TB jedi council.
I was brought into a band by my former lead guitarist who is also a good friend and talented musician.
His roommate is a singer/ singwriter with a lot of potential in that his songs are good and his voice his decent, which is why i took the gig.
The drummer he found is amazing and a good guy as well.
The issue is the singer. To begin with, his life is a mess. He lives in my guitarists extra bedroom mostly for free (throws a few hundred bucks in rent once a month maybe) and drives the band van (also the guitarist's)
He makes promises about gigs that then dont materialize, and the one show we did play no one got paid. Has a lot of acquaintances with the big touring names, which is why I thought he was a rising star.
He sucks at rhythm guitar, will put the capo on the wrong fret, cant play the correct chords consistently to a 3 chord cover.
He is also a major diva, in that he is very controlling and possessive of anything to do with the band image, shows up late to his own rehearsals that are about 10 feet from his bedroom, etc.
HE LOVES NICKELBACK AND CREED....EWWW
The final straw was when my lead guitarist's significant other, who is a professional photographer, agreed to do a band photoshoot in preparation for an upcoming music video.
The singer had a whole laundry list of requirements including leather jackets (in oklahoma summer). He then was the only one that didnt bring any of his mandated accoutrements.
He showed up an hour late while we were standing around waiting for him in downtown OKC.
We do the shoot, photographer does phenomenal work, we go home.
She sends us the model release forms so she can edit and compile the photos into a package etc.
He refuses to sign until he sees the finished product and makes a huge stink about it. The photographer says she usually wont even do a photoshoot without signed releases but because of the affiliation she went ahead with it.
He still wont sign, nor let anyone do anything with photos without his approval. She says good luck finding a photographer that will do a photoshoot without a model release, and also reminds him she did this for free and at the last minute.
He tells her have a nice life.
Keep in mind, this is his lead guitarists and roommates girlfriend who just bent over backwords doing at least a few hundred dollars worth of work for us for free.
Drummer and I start talking and both decide the pattern is clear and we want to leave. Drummer invites me over to his other band which is an established gigging band that just lost their bassist.
I talk to lead guitarist and he says he doesnt blame me one bit for leaving. He has to think on its as ti whether he leaves too, as it is obviously harder for him to disentangle himself from the situation.
I was going to put my notice in after the weekend. Then the singer puts on the band distro that he has found a high profile manager that will help us get gigs opening for the big names that come through, and who is taking g him to meet Post Malone ( because a rock/ country singer needs to meet a rapper/ pop culture personality )
I have a feeling it is one of a few things:
1. specious like his other big promises,
2. He will alienate any profesisonal manager/ musician with his behavior and my reputation will be tarnished as well
3. Maybe a legit manager will kick his butt into gear and make him behave. But that person will also take half our gig money because managers dont work for free.
Do I just leave, or see where it goes? I am about to go to a 2 week field exercise with the army reserves for all of july so I'll be out for a while regardless.
And yes, I fired the drummer, or did we fire each other then join another band.so I can fire him there too?
