When is your bass "good enough"?

After trying out a bunch, I finally found the perfect Precision neck for this body. The frets are flawless and the bass now plays like a dream. Might still add a Dimarzio WillPower humbucker in the far neck position (wired with a coil tap switch), but as of now, the 1978-ish Ibanez Musician single coil and Explorer bass humbucker cover all of my needs tonally.

First,I find a bass that I like visually.
This always means dark natural satin finished basses with no pickguards.
Then,if needed,I switch the hardware to gold finished hardware.
Sometimes the pickups and electronics will be upgraded.

I'm not really concerned with searching for a certain tone or sound.
I let each bass have it's own sound and tone.
If it's bright,it's bright.
If it's dark,it's dark.
But most can do both.

You know it's good enough when you forget about it while playing. When nothing about it draws your attention, and you find yourself enjoying the music as if you're just one of the listeners. At that point your hardware can't be improved in any meaningful way because transparency is its final form.
