could you talk a little about how you approach a session or gig where you just can't seem to feel the music or come up with a part you're happy with?

Really by trying to find that ONE thing that you can admire about the music/artist. Then paying close attention to that one thing and sort of using it as a rock to hold on to.

Even if it's just their hair. Or the words in one song section.
