I have never felt safe when people around me carry guns. It reminds me of bad things. If I walked in a restaurant full of armed people or breast-naked girls with guns in their pockets I'd probably go berzerk...

I highlighted the better part. As for your personal fears, most of us do not share them.

I don't think that "the problem" lies with the people of the country concerned, but rather with the "laws of the land".
All I can add is that when I was a f##ked-up teenager, I might well have shot a bunch of people (myself included), if I could have got my hands on a gun (instead, I wrote angry song lyrics
).This has nothing to do with nationality, or what responsible, adult citizens and trained law-enforcers do with ballistic weapons (IMO). The key factor here is that some countries have laws which make it (too) easy for mentally unstable (i.e. pubescent teenagers :scowl: ) people to get hold of lethal weapons.
I think that the problem would be more widespread, if other countries had similar "gun laws".
Actually, when you look at this topic in the context of what's going on in the wider world these days, it doesn't really matter much ....

I really don't have any ill-feeling towards guns, infact I always owned and enjoyed shooting them in England on ranges with Grandad... fun fun fun.
But... since moving to the US 15 years ago, the only person I know who owns guns is a friend of mine we'll call Doug. He owns many pistols and they are legal and liscensed etc... I'd like to add that Doug also has a recent and long history of alcoholism, drug addiction, violence, burglary, car theft, fraud and hasn't had a steady job in over 4 years and is divorcing his wife of 8 years. He also just got his carry permit.

I realize the topic has spun into a conversation on gun control, but when I first read the OP's link, I knew I'd read something contradicting the armed students story:

You need proof of gun ownership being evidence of decadence? How worse can it get? You need more than having people being afraid everywhere and carying guns, in order to be convinced that you live in decadence? It seems that people in your country are prepared for a gunslaughter everywhere they stand, drinking coffee, having dinner, having a stroll. A gun is always nearby to protect them, or to harm them. Instead I can go on a stroll without thinking a gun is necessary to protect me. I don't even need my fists. A society where every loafer on the street is a possible offender, to my eyes is a decadent society. A society where people are afraid to walk without the support of a gun is a society far more problematic than what I would dub 'decadent'. And I don't need any more proof for that.
The bad things I was referring to is simply that guns are not toys. You have gun threads on this forum, just like you have 'show of your bass' threads. Having a gun is becoming hip - let alone 'necessary'-, and some people among you show them off saying 'I wouldn't mind shooting somebody with this baby'. Now if this is not decadent, I don't know what the hell is. Puppies being beaten? No. And I don't like the irony. And no, I don't wet myself when I see guns, because I have used one, and I have been in a war, and I have shot people and I have been shot. And I know what it is like, and I can assure you it is not a show off thing, nor a toy. My country, along with other european countries has come a long way to assure personal freedom. With no guns. Your country has the shortest history, when compared to european countries, and you have already reached a point as a society where you don't feel safe anymore, not even when you're strolling (at least not without a gun). People are safer in Bosnia and Herzegovina, or in Montenegro. Because they don't feel threatened all the time. They don't feel like as soon as they walk out the door, some dude is going to come to them and ask them for money and they'll have to show off their new .45 in order to kill this dude.
On a final note, I don't want to convince anyone that all this gun talk is completely decadent and futile. Do as you wish, it is your country, your society and your responsibility. But don't be surprised when you have V-tech or columbine high incidents. And don't be surprised when you learn that you're the only country where this has ever happened so many times.
There are so many things wrong with your post I barely know where to begin. First off, when you look at population, the most dangerous cities in the U.S. have the strictist gun laws, and these cities are safer, statistically then London, Amsterdam, Budapest, and a whole lot of other European "gun free" cities. Secondly, didn't Australia and England resort to disarming the populace after events such as V-tech took place? Plenty of us have been in wars, been shot and shot people, this makes you an authority on nothing. You should worry about greek politics and stay the hell out of American political conversations that you know nothing about and that have nothing to do with you. One of the reasons America is the most powerful country on the planet is because of our constitution (including the 2nd amendment) You have nothing to say about what freedoms U.S. citizens should be allowed to enjoy. Our forefathers left Europe a couple hundred years ago and anybody who wants a return to European style government should move back there and Europeans who don't like the fact that we , as Americans, enjoy greater freedom than they do, should stay there. The U.N., or anybody who is not a U.S. citizen, has absolutely no buisness concerning themselves with internal, domestic United States policies. Spread your ******** in your own country.

I cannot fathom how you think that you can sustain this sort of status when apparently your country is the most hated one around the world. And since you like statistics, I can present you with a fair amount of diagrams proving that although your life status as americans is about the same as that in Denmark, the average american consumes about 5 times the energy the average Dane consumes. If you like to take a look at the charts yourself, if i recall correctly they should be in this book: Boyle, G., Everett, B., Ramage, J., Energy Systems and Sustainability: Power for a Sustainable Future, The Open University, Oxford University Press, United Kingdom, 2003.

I can't honestly argue with you there. I don't really give a crap about energy consumption but, our country is definitely decadent and it may lead to our downfall. Muslims hate us because of MTV and the glorification of sex and adultery. I am a conservative and am just as appalled by MTV as Akbar or whoever, I just don't go around killing innocent people to show my disdain. I have no problems with you voicing your opinion about American foreign policy or relations but, since you have nothing at stake, domestically speaking, any opinion you have regarding internal American affairs is irrellevant. and I don't care if every other country hates us, as long as they remain afraid to start a war with us. The surest way to keep the peace is to have the best weapons and the best military, which we do. I also agree with you that the U.S. should keep it's nose out of other countries buisness and our money too. Our Government is in the buisness of buying compliance, which is B.S.! this is a forum and it's intent and purpose is to discuss. whether someone is from the us or not has nothing to do with the validity of his opinion.
if you want anyone ot stay out of your internal affairs, please abide by the same rules. bring your soldieres back home then and make sure they stay there.
Sorry for interfering with your internal affairs, but to think that the US is the sole superpower right now because of it's constitution and the 2nd amendment is a joke (and the joke is on you)
I'd also like to see some evidence for the bold claim that a US citizen enjoys more freedom than one from the EU.
