When should I buy my second bass?

When you know you'll keep with playing bass you should start thinking about it

iv been playing bass for a year now an im the owner of 2 diferent squires and a laguna LB524sm so i say if it seemes right and its a nice bass jus go for it or youll end up sitting on your couch with your old bass wishing you bought it

The question is, why shouldn't you?

If you want a new bass, get a new bass.

If you don;'t want a new bass, don't get a new bass.

I know I'd be on at least my 5th if I actually had money lol.

And I've only been playing for about 2 and a half years.

Get a crap bass to back up the squire if you're gigging steadily without a backup.

Else save and save, until you believe you've found one that will become your primary instrument for many years.

Find the one bass you love to play and then get a backup. The best years of playing were when I didn't have an arsenal. An arsenal is fun, but it will make you schizophrenic. Looking backwards, I would say play ONE and have another in case it breaks or shorts out or something. You will develop the best technique and chops on the same guitar. I try and switch on the fly now, and the various spacings and string lengths cause me to have to "adjust" for a brief time before I hit all my notes cleanly. I have a MIM Squier P and it's not my best guitar, but it isn't my worst. I could've stuck with it as my main bass and it would have been sufficient. Opinions vary greatly, but a boutique or expensive instrument doesn't necessarily translate into better. Many have incredible craftsmanship, but don't sound any different than a much cheaper guitar. And the old dudes will tell you, no two guitars sound the same. Even from the same model and year.

I still have the MIM, RBX 765, Modified P and Samick.

The reason why I bought all theses basses? Either I thought I was getting a good deal or I thought a different bass would make my playing sound better. Then after hearing someone play a cheapy bass that sounded incredible, I realized that it is not the bass that makes the musician, but the musician who makes the bass.

I implore you, instead looking for another bass, save your money and keep practicing. About the time you realize that you have made real progress, you will have saved up enough to buy a real nice instrument.


Or you could do like the rest of us and buy and sell basses until you get it right. I still don't have it right.
