Unless you distribute them to those kids, then you really arent an advocate. Plus, even with protection loud noise too loud WILL do damage. Also, Half the things youve send in this thread contradict half of the other things youve said.

But I don't expect much from Internet forums on issues like this, it's just funny to see it unfold.
It's simple: take care of yourself, and don't subject yourself to situations you aren't comfortable with.

Ugh. Wear earplugs if it's too loud. Simple as that. FWIW there ARE genres around now using massive volume with the intent of creating a physical element to the live show that is well beyond most other bands. Stoner rock, doom, drone, all these kind of bands are for the most part all about high volume for this reason. This idea that a band has any responsibility for their fans hearing health is absurd. No one is forcing anyone to stay in a room/not wear earplugs or go see a loud band in general. A friend of mine likened seeing my band to getting a full body massage for an hour. That's the point of it for us at least. Of course, some just plain like it loud and could care less about the physical element it brings. That's fine too IMO. Last show we played, the other bands on the bill we're great and all, but the soundguy had them so quiet on stage and in the PA that all you could hear is people talking over them. We tell them just mic the drums and the bass will come from the stage and it was way louder than all the other bands and the PA. Not everyone is playing music for people to chit chat over and too many soundguys try to force some lame-ass minimum volume level on every band so they all end up sounding the same. It sucks. Just let bands put on the show they want to.

When I saw the band Sunn play a couple years ago, I made the mistake of not wearing earplugs. They play around 120-125 db's on stage, with PA support for subs/vocals/keys equally as loud. Inside a 400-500 person capacity bar/venue. For an hour and a half the whole building was shaking, I could feel pressure on my chest and my eyeballs would shake against my eyelids when I closed my eyes. Absolutely the most intense thing I've ever experienced. It was great. It was also no one's fault but my own that my hearing was messed up from that show.

It can NEVER be the bands responsiblity to watch their fans' hearing. That's plain stupid.
If people are stupid enough to go to shows without hearing protection (guilty as charged) then it's your fault and ONLY your fault.
People cannot count on someone else watching out for them and holding their hand all the way through life.

Or better yet, buck up, quit the day job, take an income hit and go out and put it all on the line in support of artists.
You'll get some thicker skin quick.

Funny thing I went to a Metallica concert last time they toured and their volume was very good. Compared to an AC/DC concert where the volume keep creeping up as the gig went on. I could hardly hear anything when we got out and had ringing ears for 5 days.

I remember going to the Troubadour in LA one time. The volume was so high you would yell in people’s ears and they could not hear you. Funny how they were selling hearing protection to the public at the venue.

I carry ear plugs with me when I go to concerts or shows. I may not use them if the volume is under control, but I have them if I need them. I was at a Bad Religion show last month and I used them.

I carry ear plugs in my instrument case. I have worn them during gigs. I don't wear them at low volume gigs.

I lost some of my hearing while deployed to Iraq. I have to preserve what I have left. It is my responsibility to protect my hearing.

I don't feel that my band has to be loud to be entertaining. In my opinion, the perfect volume for a bar gig is to be loud enough to mix well with a drum kit that isn't mic'd. That is room/situation dependent. A big room may require us to play louder and mic the kit. If we have mic the kit, I am putting in the plugs. I know we are going to have to loud to fill the space.

If you are playing doometalmathcorenoiserock... the volume is probably going to be higher. If you are a fan of that kind of music, it is incumbent on you to protect your hearing.

That's not a good argument. Most people are ignorant to the effects of going to loud shows. That doesn't mean we should pummel their ears to death anyways. It's not stupid, it's called responsibility and having consideration for others. Educating people to make their own decisions in the meantime is good, but it's not a bad thing to look out for other people where they are weak.

Aside from the attendees hearing there's also the venue's employees hearing to be worried about. OSHA has standards for noise exposure in the workplace. I'd think that those apply here.

I do take care of myself. I am just smart enough to take care of those around me as well. I do need an audience to hear my music in order to have fans right? Or no no....i should maintain the stupid "feeling the music" attitude and let them go deaf before they wise up. Far be it from me to have had a very bad hearing scare and want to help those around me. I even carry extra plugs for my friends when we go out clubbing/bar hopping every week.

Its just like many things people do in life, doing harmful things thinking it wont catch up with you till one day youve done irresverisble damage.
