Where do Squires Rate?

Not up on the myriad of Fenders. I know MIM=bad and MIA or MIJ=good. (Being somewhat facetious. Lighten up!) But where do Squires rank for reputation? I've got a local fretless P Bass spotted on CL. Unless it absolutely blows me away, its likely to end up trade/auction fodder so I need to make sure I'm getting it for a bargain price.

I think most people like him. He's influenced quite a few players.

If you're referring to Squiers, then their latest lines, the VMs and CVs, seem to have a reputation somewhat similar to MIM Fenders. The Affinity line has a bad rep, pretty unfairly. I've played quite a few and they all played well/had a nice sound. A good setup+good strings will make anything tons better.

MIM does not = bad.

CV=Classic Vibe, VM=Vintage Modified. Is that what you meant by designations?

I think this is what he means. Sorry about the shorthand. We get so used to using it for so many things here on Talkbass that we tend to forget that not everyone knows it.

Look up Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified in the search. I'm actually the founder of the Classic Vibe club found here:

The Affinities are the cheapest Squiers. The quality control is not the best, though you can find some diamonds in the rough once in a while. The two lines mentioned above are lightyears ahead of the Affinities in quality...wood, electronics, hardware.

I like him a lot. He was particularly brilliant on the track "Gates Of Delirium" from the album 1974 album "Relayer".

Andhe also plays well and has a nice sound :)
