Where do you guys rehearse?

My current band has a great practice room in the drummers house. The new band I'm forming is practicing in our singers house in another really good practice room above his garage, but I also have access to a warehouse space that we could use if we needed. So I'm pretty fortunate on those counts.

My one band practices in the Drummer's basement, the other at an old warehouse building owned by the drummer. Both have a drum kit and basic PA (and amps, actually) that stay there. I agree that moving and setting up a drum kit for every practice isn't very practical. Keep amps at a practice space is nice but optional IMO because it's not hard to bring a combo or something relatively portable each time.

Is the barn safe, secure and does it have some level of climate control? If so, I'd convince him to move his kit there or buy a cheap set to keep there. If the barn is not really a suitable place to keep equipment, I'd practice at the parent's house as long as they tolerate it. To me, spending money monthly to rent a space doesn't make sense unless you really have no oher option. Your opinion may vary.

I think the desire is there to play more often, but the rest of the band feels the same way as I do about it being weird to play in his parents basement at this age. It's actually getting in the way of progress!

Just a guess but I'm willing to bet once he had a kit set up in your barn and didn't have to deal with making arrangements with mom and dad, he'd love it. If he doesn't trust you to take care of his equipment, that's one thing. However, is this a trust issue, or is he merely afraid of change?

Having the rehearsals at your barn makes a lot of sense to me. A new phase in the evolution of the band.




As for where I used to do the band practice thing, I cheated..... I used the family business' warehouse. The last gig I did was a coffee shop acoustic thing so the rehearsals were in my living room. I'm single so I get to do cool things like that.

Last band, we played at the drummers house in a band room.It was a decent space set up solely for band practice. We had recording gear and full headset practices with live drums & amps. He didn't want to move his kit either. Heck, I would prefer if he didn't because he would take WAY too long to set up. I'm talking well over an hour.

Current band, we practice in the drummers basement or the BL's basement. We've been using the BL's house more lately, but either place works fine for me. I don't leave any gear so it's not really any different to me.

I'll just bring a small combo or a single cab to practice. Just something to get by really. I'll bring my full rig if I need to tweak something or try something out, which is pretty much never.

We have a decent rehearsal space in our guitarist basement.

If a band doesn't have their own rehearsal space in a members home, I would not be a match for that band.

I am not paying and hauling gear in an out of rehearsal space.

We do not have rehearsals we learn songs as homework and when everyone is ready we play it live on stage. Exciting to say the least when we tell the people this is the first time we are going to perform this song as a band and we do our thing. Everyone in the band feeds off of each other and thankfully we have yet to crash and burn on stage and we have been doing it this way since 2005 :)

We rent a reharsal room in a converted industrial building that has something like 30 or so rooms. 24/7 you can make noise anytime you want as loud as you want. All our merch and stage gear is there, just way convenient to have it all in one place.
I would never expect to play at someone else house making all that noise, especially when all of us in the band have young kids. And I would never want that kind of attention drawn to my own house adversting to strangers and passerbys that there is gear in this house.

One of the bands I'm in rehearses in my basement. The drummer leaves his kit there, and has a practice kit at home.

The other band I'm in rehearse in the guitar player's man cave garage...heated floors for winter, AC in the summer, beer fridge, 60" TV, internet, etc. The drummer of that band leaves a kit there and has a practice kit at home. I leave an extra 410 cab there and only have to haul my bass and the head back and forth.

We rehearse at the same place I hold the Mn TB GTG's.
3800 sq ft with 22' ceilings.
It's bigger and sounds better then must clubs.

Both of my bands use my basement. When I was house-hunting a few years ago, I specifically looked for a place that had a good spot to set up gear. The house I ended up buying has a 900 square-foot basement. I picked the driest corner, set up my electronic drums, a couple of amps, mics, and a PA. The neighbors can barely hear us and the only other occupants in my house are the cats, so it works out quite well.
