Where do you pluck the strings and why?

I play a Fender Jazz Bass and i find myself sitting at 8-9 myself, and its mostly because I tend to use my bridge pickup as a thumb anchor. I've played in the exact same spot from the very first time i ever picked the bass up, and ive gotten so used to it that I usually can just adjust my tone/ pickup volume to get most tones i want. If im playing something with more of a bluegrass feel i will play around 1 though, and when i play guitar im totally all over depending on what im trying to do and what pickup configuration i use (on my single coil strat and humbucker strat, on my old les paul i usually just sat around 4)
