I love that YouTubers like Charles Berthoud, Davey504, and others are making bass cool, hip, and relevant for a new generation. If a kid decides to pick up a bass because of Davey, awesome! If a kid decides to pick up bass because of Fieldy in Korn, awesome.


Who made any of us judges and gatekeepers?

While we sit around our little clubhouse and TalkBass, they go out and PlayBass.

My favorite bass YouTube channels are those of Nathan Navaro and Ivan Carranza.

Nate Navarro is incredibly creative!

I love Charles too. His playing is immaculate.

I think he transcends the wankery quite often and plays some intricate, mind-blowingly beautiful stuff.

If Charles’ pen ends up as good as his playing he might be quite famous some day.

You can call it a platitude but when it pencils out in reality such that it matches the words it’s hard to discount it. Again, the perception to those outside of a seemingly lucky circumstance is often entirely different than those involved in it directly.

Yes, it doesn’t seem like luck to them. But I think it is now generally accepted that is a form of survivorship bias.

The other side of the luck coin holds the folks who were just as talented but had some catastrophe or another befall them.

Not to short change Charles on the obvious hard work, dedication, and talent he has.

Why do bass players always refer to guys with chops/technique/speed as wankers? I rarely hear "that wanker Charlie Parker" "That wanker Coltrane" "That wanker Tony Williams" etc.

These threads are always fun. Lots of jealousy flying around disguised as a dismissive “if you like that sort of thing” attitude. Charles is a truly amazing player and composer. Wankery, omg. The guy was trying to make a living playing bass, he’s talented and people look down their noses. Get over yourselves, maybe go practice.

Takes an ungodly amount of hours and hard work to be able to play like that. I have to imagine that anyone who doesn't appreciate it or has something negative to say about it, well, it's because they can't play like that.
I'm glad his hard work didn't go to waste and he found a way to be successful and make some money with it.
It's better than the other 99% of YouTubers out there, doing "how to" vids,...who have no idea what they're doing or talking about.
(Why does everyone feel the need to make a video these days?)

Twelve or so years ago C.B. was a baggage handler at an airport. His hard work is paying off. He is over in the States now and making a living from music. I hope he prospers!!

Threat to ego is the answer to the first part.

The threat of losing one's credibility is the second.

So in a roundabout way.... also ego.

Never heard of him either .. they say he’s a good YouTube player .. another of those slap/tap/happy guys who started by showing off their chops, trying to evolve towards comedy when they realised that the audience’s comments were starting to cool down I guess.
Boring, another movie I’ve already seen I believe, although, to be honest I’ve never watched any of his videos.
I prefer guys such as JULES JACKSON, whom I can learn something usable from.
But this is just me and my 2 cents.
