Where is Larry Hartke?

Had a good laugh with him over the phone back when he had that “call me” add in bass player magazine. My wife insisted that he make an amp that made no noise…he said….”the noise floor on my amps is pretty low!”…..she said “no…like no sound at all!….it’s all I hear all day!”
Seemed like a nice fellow

He is, without doubt. I used to see him at Sam Ash all the time and he liked to chat with people.

I was always impressed that he never took it personally when I told him I didn’t care for his amps much. He would ask what brand I did like and what I liked about it and he would comment that it was great that bass players had so many choices. A class act.

I’m not sure he actually “worked” at Sam Ash, really. He had some sort of partnership with them and I think he spent a lot of time hanging out there as a sort of ambassador for his brand. Either way, he was always pleasant to talk to.

He never struck me as being in great health. With all that’s going on in the world, I wouldn’t blame him for laying low and steering clear of public places for a while.

You think a guy who lives on ham subs and Rolling Rock beer isn’t healthy? ;) Actually Larry seems to be doing fine. I have no access to his medical reports but there’s no indication that he’s in bad health on his Facebook.

I still have his number in my phone from when he would publish it in his ads in Bass Player magazine. Maybe I should text him that some of us on TB would like to know what and how he’s doing these days.

I remember having 2 or 3 twenty minute phone calls with him about twenty years ago. He was really easy to talk with and seemed to genuinely care about suggestions and preferences.

This reminds me of some emails I had with James Brown (formerly of Amptweaker). James was always interested in comments, both good & bad for the furthering of all product lines... great guy, who's responsible for building quite a few notable pieces of gear. He would pop in to TheGearPage quite often.
