Which amp?

Hey guys,
I am new here, and new to bass also. Im looking for a reasonably priced practice amp, any suggestions? Actually I will be buying my first bass outfit, and have a $500 budget. Am currently looking at Squier standard jazz, but am not sure. thanks for the help

Used. And don't get a practice amp. You can get a very nice combo that will be small enough for practice and big enough for gigs for $250-300 used. I'd start looking in the 200w range. As for the bass, it's OK, but you could get a Mexican Jazz used for $250-300 all day long and it will be a lot better. Or you could get one of those terrific Squier Vintage Jazz basses new for $280.

$500 minus $280 for a Squier Vintage jazz bass leaves you with $220 for an amp. You can't get much of a new amp for that. I recommend you start looking on eBay (or even better, your local craigslist) for a used 200 watt 1x12, 1x15 or 2x10 combo amp.

You said you just wanted an amp to play around the house - any $99 practice amp will do that. However, the time will come (VERY SOON) when you will want to play with a guitarist, and maybe even with a drummer. That just won't be possible unless your amp has a certain amount of power.
