The King of bass amps is the SVT. After lusting for one forty years, I finally have one. A VERY early (we think the 12th one) MTI unit that still has the Magnavox (70's) circuitry using American parts. It is a tone MONSTER. It offers a bazillion tone options and appears incapable of making a bad tone.
I also have a cherry VT-22. I intend to transplant the amp section into a head box, preserving the rest of the (excellent condition, unmolested) combo. A V4B is an excellent choice. At only 100 watts, one third the power of an SVT, it still has PLENTY O' power. And plenty of tone.
Finally, I have a BA-115HPT, which is also a good amp. But.....lacks the muscle of the other two. Its 200 solid state watts are wimpy compared to the 100W VT-22, let alone the SVT.
It is hard for me to imagine how people can hear these old Ampeg tube amps and not notice their tone is vastly superior to all other amps.
