Which bands would you like to be in?

I'd always pick a band where the bass player seems to be having the most fun - not the one where the bass player necessarily has the most difficult job. Accordingly, I'd most like to be the bass player in U2. By that, I mean absolutely no disrespect to His Clayton-ness - on the contrary. He's in a space I'd love to inhabit! Lots and lots of spectrum available and a big happy audience. The rest of the band are pretty serious musicians too. Bono's occasional lapse into megalomania can be overlooked - he is getting to that age isn't he...

A close second would be to have played with John Martyn. See this link:

Alan Thompson on fretless - saw JM live several times with this excellent bass player. Not a sentimental note in his repertoire.

I would love to be in the Flecktones!!!! Playing with Vic alone would be worth it. But man, those guys write some fantastic songs and play so well off of each other, and it's just downright fun to play their stuff. I've met all the members, except Howard Levy (but I did meet Jeff Coffin), and all are just really wonderful humble people who are really insightful. Plus they're my favorite band, they have such a unique sound, but it works so well. I would give anything to play with those guys.

I would also love to play in the Dave Matthews Band. They also play really well off of each other and jam so well. And with Carter Beauford backing you up, can you go wrong?

Others to note would be any of the Flecktones solo outings (especially Vic's), Rush, Radiohead, Muse, Pearl Jam, Yellowjackets... and many more I'm sure I'm forgetting...

I would love to be in Rancid.

Matt Freeman's basslines are insanely fun to play. They aren't complex or hard; they're gorgeous and both guitars stay in very high frequencies so he cuts through the mix like a hot knife through butter.

I wouldn't want to be in any of the legendary acts some have mentioned. I'd be afraid the fans would never truly accept me as a replacement bassist.

I'd like a chance to be in Blue October. I really relate to the music although I'd encourage Justin to rediscover his earlier work. And frankly, I'd be filling some rather big shoes on the bass as is.

+1 to Foo Fighters. Love their stuff, and they all seem like real legit dudes you could have a beer with. It was immediately what I thought of when I saw the thread title.

+1 to DMB - Stefan Lessard was my #1 influence when I started playing.

I would looooooooove to play in the Roots. I mean, hey, all the gigs I play are in Philly, so that gives me enough cred, right? Plus I'm growing my jew-fro back, so me and Questlove would match.

Hmmm... speaking of white boy fros - I would also love to play in NIN. I'm adept at guitar and keys and love fuzzin the eff out, so I think I could handle it pretty well. I would need to work on my pick chops tho :hmm:
