Which bass? Advice needed

:) All that makes sense to me. Rics are a beauty but I think that you're right about a P-bass being more suitable for this kind of music. What I'd do is buy a P-bass and put a nice big poster of a Ric on my wall to stare and admire. :smug:

Does MXR flanger sound really good with bass? And why is it so expensive? 257 US$ retail.. :hmm:

Siouxsie and the Banshees? Steve Severin always used an MXR flanger. I'll wager Robert used one around the time of Pornography... On bass, what I have heard, is excellent. I should make an MP3 of that band fade so you can hear just how awesome the bass sounded through an MXR flanger. Actually, at times, it seemed like they ran EVERYTHING through the flanger, lol...

And they are expensive, well, i don't really know why MXR stuff is so expensive except for the quality... street price is around $180 US for them...

You play what style? Finger or with a pick? It also really depends on the tone you are looking for. Fenders J can play any style adequately. Fender Precision have a thicker, rounder tone. Dunno about Fender Mustangs as far as tone go, but they looks cool. Warwick Corvettes have a sweet mellow tone, but looks aren't for everybody (the horny horn). Musicman are more expensive, and the tone is unique too. As for the hordes of Ibanez, Yamahas, they are safe bets. It's just a matter of tone and looks. They are easy to play and solid.

For U2, rock style stuff, a Fender knock off (P / P-J / J-J) would be good. Fender designs have been the undisputed rock bass champ for decades.

Also, as for 'beautiful', beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I don't like the Rick look, I'm not big on the Fender look, it's all subjective :) I like a more contemporary, lean look (Corts, Ibanez SRs, BTBs, ...).

A new Rick 4003 has plenty of low end. I find my jetglo to be able to get just as low as my jazz, but with a much better sound imo. Get the Rick, I mean a lead singer with a Rick is the best combination ever. For confirmation on low end of a Rick, listen to Sgt. Peppers.

The local shop received a black 1978 P-bass with a blonde maple neck. I'm G.A.S.sed like crazy. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to do this very soon. Do you guys think that it is worth the 2100 US$ they're asking for it?

sounds beautiful, similar to my japanese p-bass (check out the thread listed in my signature file for the MIJ club to see a pic of it...), but $2100 US might be a little steep considering I see them going on ebay for around $1200, but if it's difficult to get them in Russia, you might be better off buying that one. If you are really in Russia, of course, sometimes people put off the wall locations in there profiles ;)

ps - what band are you in? sounds like my kind of music!

The band is called Link Removed, you can check it out on MySpace if you click the link. We're going to have several new songs uploaded soon but for now we have only a fragment of the live show video up and an mp3 of a very old song which is not indicative of today's state of things. Can't wait until we finish the mixing. :hyper:

About the bass.. Do you guys (SurrenderMonkey, eboe)really think it's steep consideting that it's vintage 1978 instrument in mint condition? :hmm:

I'm not into the old-school market tbh, couldn't care less about the vintage mark up, and not being a Fender guy, but I would not be prepared to pay that much for a Precision bass.

I mean, do you want / need a vintage instrument? or just a nice looking P Bass? You should be able to get a new P Bass that will play and look just as good for a lot less. Even more, You should get a nice P-bass copy for a lot lot lot less, but nothing wrong going for the real thing.

I need a great sounding, nice looking and reliable instrument for both gigging and recording. I don't know.. I always thought there was something to vintage instruments. Am I wrong?

Any more feedback?

well, i mean vintage stuff is nice due to the instrument "settling in" - 28 years will make it nicely aged IMHO but the price has to be something you are willing to spend. Did you play it?

here's a 1977 almostthe same as yours, and the starting price is $1500 - 1977 p-bass black modded
and that one has been modded, if yours is clean and original and hard to get in Mother Russia, then why not jump on it. But the important thing is PLAY IT FIRST.

also, for example, here is a 1978 one with a couple of little mods but includes the original parts fo you to restore back - 1978 P-bass black

I woudn't bother personnaly. These Vintage are like investments, and this one sounds expensive. Get a new P-Bass, or a second hand, but for a reasonable price. A new one will look just the same. Surely you can get a nice looking, decent P Bass in russia. These things have been around for ages and sold all over the world.

If you have the money for the vintage one, by all means... But I would spend that extra money on a nice amp instead or mic (since you are a singer), while still having an instrument that sounds and looks great.

Check out the Fender site. That Aged Cherry Burst looks really nice. BTW, for the record, I would go for a Jazz instead. But since you are set on a P bass...

Dunno if they still export MIJs, but if you can't find your instrument in Russia, you can try Ishibashi for a MIJ Fender, or Thomann.de for an American Fender, see if they ship to Russia.
