Just finished a new ep with my band, Ulysses Cannon, here in NY. I used 3 basses in a variety of ways and have the specifics listed below, and I thought it would be fun if people guess what I played on which song. Six bass styles listed, which one was used on each song?

Bass 1 - White P Bass:
  • MIM body
  • Fender USA pickups
  • 500k Volume and Tone pots
  • Fender USA Standard Jazz neck (now switched to an American Special Jazz neck)
  • Ernie Ball Rounds - .110-.055
  • Ampeg bass head (pictured) through Ampeg 8 x 10" cabinet
  • Played with a pick


Bass 2 - White P Bass:
  • MIM body
  • Fender USA pickups
  • 500k Volume and Tone pots
  • Fender USA Standard Jazz neck (now switched to an American Special Jazz neck)
  • Ernie Ball Rounds - .110-.055
  • Ampeg bass head (pictured) through Ampeg 8 x 10" cabinet
  • Played with a fingers

  • String Through Body

I know there are only 3 different basses and I listed 6. The point is that each bass listed is a different setup. Well, which one am I playing on each song? I'll reveal the answers soon!

Its that modern thing of the bass just being blended in like a synh pad or soemthing, instead of being afundamentald riving force

Anyway, therin lies your problem, can't tell one from another in that context

Impressive amount of work went into creating this little treasure hunt...but I respectfully submit for your consideration that this time would have been put to better use practicing. Those tracks sound quite messy and it doesn't matter what bass you were playing quite frankly.

BTW, what is the difference in sound between black and white finishes. :eek:

There is no sound difference between finish obviously. But if you checked what I wrote is was to discern between which bass I was playing from the pics. They're both P basses, with different electronics, I thought finish would be the easiest distinction. I'll leave this up for the weekend if anyone wants to take a crack, then i'll remove the thread since the mixes don't work.

You got a few of the basses correct, not the finger/pick styles though, not saying which yet.

I did something similar a few months back, but I played 4 different basses, with different strings, different "tone" woods, different string numbers, different pickup configurations.

The four basses were a 4 string P with flats, a 4 string Jazz, a 5 string Lakland 55-02, and a Peavey Cirrus 6.

I pretty much got no comments, and in the mix the only one that really stood out was the P with flats. It sounded a lot different that the others, but you could have taken the other three and mixed and matched them and no one would have known.

I had each bass set flat and running DI into my DAW interface. No EQ, no pre, nothing. Just the sound of the bass.

That exercise proved to me that much of the stuff people make big deals out of are really very minor. Dan Atkinson had a big thread that compared various basses with a bass he built out of plywood. It was pretty amusing.
