For me, it depends on the instrument. My cheaper basses have a gig bag,....all my premium basses such as my Jaydees are housed in a Hiscox case or molded rectangular soft shells like a Road Runner case.

Which bass case do you prefer: Hardshell, softshell, or a gig bag?

Gig bag for convenience, hard shell for protection. And for the basses I own, it's protection over convenience every time.
For shipping and gigs where protection is needed I use a Pelican case. For casual gigs I use a Mono keyboard case. Both are the same size so I can switch out the foam for whichever bass I take.
Gig bag, always. Haven’t used a hard case in years.
Double gig bag since it goes in the back seat. All other gear goes in the trunk. If I were to move basses in the same space as heavy gear, they'd be in their hard cases.

Depends on the circumstance; both gig bags and HSCes.
My preference is having a hard case for each bass I own so I can store them safely in the house, not having to worry about damaging them when I have to shuffle them around in the closet I keep them in.
And a couple of good, padded gig bags for the times I take one, or two out with me to play live.

I have a hardshell case but never use it. I prefer to use well padded gig bags locally.
A custom 35" gig bag that has compartments for my 21" scale modified bass uke, a small floor stand, iPad Pro holder, cup holder, custom torso strap and cable as a backup to my wireless system.
Gigbags all the way, I have a couple of hardcases under the bed that I keep a couple of instruments in when they're not getting used for a while, but they never leave the house.
Not only are gigbags more convenient to transport and carry, but they're easier to deal with at gigs where space is tight. I can lean them up against a wall to unpack and repack, unlike a hardcase that takes up floor space. First world problems and all that, but some spaces are tiny!

As an amateur, i don't move my basses in aircraft, tour truck or so. I take care of carrying my bass myself, so gigbag all the way.
