Which bass case do you prefer: Hardshell, softshell, or a gig bag?

I have factory hard cases for almost all of my basses. One of my old basses is in a factory gig bag. My preference for gigging depends on the situation.

1. If the bass will be flown commercially or transported in an equipment truck, then only a flight case is really up to the task.
2. If the bass is transported in a passenger vehicle or passenger compartment of a tour bus, I prefer a heavy-duty padded gig bag. It's much smaller, lighter, and easier to carry.

I have transported a bass in a standard factory hard cases. The bass was transported in equipment trucks, but care was taken to place the bass on top of the other equipment. This is an accident waiting to happen IMHO. The case also was checked as baggage for a couple of legs of air travel. It made it through but took damage. Over time the case started to fail. At some point I had to wrap it with gaff tape to keep the lid closed.

Factory hard cases are okay for storing basses on shelves.

Ahem….to my original thought.

I have Mono M80 softshell cases for the basses that gig out.

I have a Mono M80 Dual Bass case when I take 2 basses. 98% of the time.

I’m looking for an old-style Music Man Stingray HSC to buy. Just in, well, case….😁.

The AM Pro II P5 that I am about to buy back has a HSC, but it will ride along in the Dual Bass case when it travel as a spare
And/or when I just bloody well feel like bringing it along.

My bases aren’t stored. They all live on a 5-slot guitar rack in my office/studio.

I’m perfectly fine with traveling them in the softshell cases. I ensure that they ride safe and well.

I also have an SKB flight case that I’ve used once. It served its purpose very well. It will stay around should a fly need arise again.

ALL my instruments are in soft shell cases.
So how the hell do I still have instruments?
Well.... You probably do a far better job of looking after your gear then I did.
Years of sliding around in truck beds, haphazard loading in and out of vans, and even occasionally being stepped on by band mates, I dought my basses would have survived.
I know my acoustic guitar wouldn't have.
Today, in semi retirement, I'd probably get along fine with soft cases. But not in my days in the trenches.

For my 3 Fenders: Hardshell at home and Mono Bass Sleeve 2.0 for gigs.
For my Pino fretless Stingray, it's that special Mono case it came with. Technically, it's not a hardshell, but a very and sturdy soft-shell. It's almost as protective as a trad hardshell. I wouldn't put it in baggage on an airplane, though.

Safe gigs: Mono Vertigo Bass. Flight gigs: Mono Vertigo Guitar case + Cort Space 5 (headless).

The Cort is small enough that I never have trouble getting it on a plane, and affordable enough that I don't worry about damage in case I have to check it in.
So the Space 5 fits just fine in a Vertigo guitar case? I really like my Space 5, but hadn't figured out a case yet, even though I bought it mostly for travel. Thanks for the news.
