Which bass is best for..

That's waht I've though too, but any model in particular?

I recall hearing a mustang and liking the sound a lot, so maybe those '51 style ones, no?

Check out the one that Chef had made for him, too. SCPB pickup (inline split, I think, for hum cancelling) plus a Nordy Big Single bridge in a slab '51 body with butterscotch blonde finish and a black (single ply, I think) guard. Can't find it in the forums right now, but you can search for it. Nice bass.

Here's another Regenerate '51 P 5er with sound clips and pics. Nordy SCPB neck PU, Nordy Fat Stack bridge, Nordy pre w/ always-on passive tone.

I think a 5-string Tele/'51 P bass with a bridge pickup would be perfect for what you're talking about. IMHO.
