Actually, I thing I'm posting a very honest question about what to choose for a next bass.
Here's the storyline: I've had a 5 string Korean Tobias bass for the last, say, 12 years or so, and I've always been very glad about it. Sweet sweet neck and play, and an awesome overall sound.
The thing is that back in the end of 2008 i bought a Gibson Thunderbird Studio 5, to suit the dark, bluesy rock band I got into.
They complement each other very well, but quite frankly, since I've been playing mostly the TBird lately, I began to find the Tobias a bit too.. cheerful, let's say. Not to mention the fact that the Tbird has a way faster neck, and since I've developed a passion for vintage style basses, it fits like a glove.. again, unlike the Tobias.
Therefore, I'm thinking of buying something to replace the Tobias (though I won't be selling it.. to emotionally attached to Him
).
What I'm looking for is:
- a 5 string bass;
- preferentially 34" or 35" (i use Rotosound R665LD's and often drop D tuning, so I prefer large scales, for better "breading");
- vintage looking (yamaha's and other "Japanese looking" basses are off..);
- clear and kinda punchy, like the Tobias, but mainly darker-sounding, like the Tbird.
Perhaps that's what changed most about my musical taste on bass guitars, ever since I have the Tbird. I felt in love with that sort of old, massive, raunchy, growly, dark sound, which I think that comes either from the PUP's or the mahogany body, I'm not sure.
Basically, a 5 string Tbird with exactly the same specs as mine, but with clearer, punchier and a tad brighter sound.
So that I won't look a total noob (I've been playing for the last 15 years), and grant some consideration and attention from the most respectful TB'ers on this matter, I do have a few basses in mind, but don't know if any of them fit my taste: 5 string Pbasses (either passive or active, old or new), Stingrays, Sandbergs and even Icemans. Other bands/models are obviously welcome. I just can't recall them all now.
