Which bass should i bring to record? Active or passive?

It's better to record with what sound you want. I can hear the bass just fine on Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and that was recorded on flatwounds that were probably about 8 -9 years old. If you have good engineer he'll get you in the mix. Why take the bass out of bass?

that's cos its motown, not punk rock, and its not really taking the bass out, its just leaving the highs in so you can still cut through a wall of guitars if needed.

I'd say take both - pull out the one you think you can play better first, and if they want you to swap then have a go with the other..

Bring both, more durabilty. Also you may find yourself overdubbing your bass in places, and theres always the possiblity of changing basses for a chorus. Will add to the song but may/may not work.

Side note:
Be careful what you wear, no zips, chain or anything like that. Before you leave your house jump around a bit, if you hear a jangling find out wot it is and change it. It will pick up on the recording!

You won't have that problem if you record direct, unless you're sitting close to the drummer's mics, and even then it's doubtful that your jangling objects will win the battle with his drums and cymbals.
Do bring both basses, though.
