Which bass should i buy?

Ive had a VM jazz bass for a few years now but i have saved enough to upgrade. There are a few options im looking at. The first one being a Danelectro 64 bass. I like the look of it alot and the different style pickups. I am really looking for a change from the typical p bass style or jazz style squire/fender pickups. Does anyone have any info on the danelectro 64 other than the info already on this site?

Other options i am considering are the 60s classic vibe mustang coming soon, Thunderbird pro by epiphone, or a mim fender pbass.

didn't vote cos I'm undecided and couldn't find anything on the 'stang, but in listening to the Dano (which I was unaware of, thx!) I'm feeling the you know what (GAS) and am always interested in a good 'bird but it's just too big. had to laff with the P choice since you want to get away from Fenders, but who can resist a good P?
the little Gretsch G2220 Junior Jet II may be worth checking out, some name players use these on stage.
other than that I can't help much unless you want a great P for minimal $, just wanted to cheer that '64!

When you are looking for a change from Ps or Js, it won' t help to buy P or a J!

I know nothing about the Danelectro. You should try one before you buy it!

Have you tried any of these? I wouldn’t take any bass on the road i wasn’t pretty comfortable with already.

Of those choices, thunderbird might be it. It’s not a PJ, and a classic look. I’m just not comfortable with the ergonomics. (I’m the same with Rics, like the sound, don’t like to play em)

I find mustangs don’t sound too different than P basses, just the mids are cut out.

Danelectro looks like it might be a one trick pony. Good for a country, or maybe a reggae band. Cool look though!

I’ll throw a wild card in: G&L L-2000. Versatile, reliable. And it definitely qualifies as “upgrade”

But we’re on talkbass so...... P bass!

Hmmm... I think we'd need more info to offer appropriate suggestions. Since you're not after P or J bass tones, what type of tone do you think you would like? What type of styling appeals to you?

I have pre-ordered one of the new Classic Vibe Jaguars as something a little "different", but it has P and J pickups. Should still be quite versatile and I LOVE the shape. I also have an Ibanez SR506 (with Bartolini soapbar pickups and a Glockenklang preamp) and it sounds (and looks and feels) very different from my CV 70's P bass. I also have a Cort GB-25 (MM style pickup) which again sounds, looks and feels different. Out of them all I like my P bass most, but can't wait for the Jaguar to arrive as I feel it should suit me even more (although it very well may not, but here's hoping). The Chinese-made CV models are absolutely fabulous for the money (the new Indonesian ones seem to be hit or miss right now) and I feel I can play my 70's P in just about any situation / genre, at least all the ones I'm interested in.

Definitely try before you buy (I wasn't able to since none of the local stores have a Jaguar in stock, but I have a good idea of what to expect from it), if there's a large music store close to you, you can at least try out what they've got and maybe try to narrow down what you're looking for.

The Epiphone Thunderbird Vintage Pro might be worth considering. Most comfortable T-bird neck I've ever played, great tone, and a lot of bass for the money.
It's readily available, too, so you shouldn't have any problem finding one to try out.

But if you’ll only have one bass, then it’s easy, P of course.

It sounds good, but doesn't sound like a Dano. Not saying that's bad, just that a Dano is a Dano sonically due to the single-coils in much the same way a Ric is a Ric for the same reason. So a Dano in name only unless the bridge pu can be split.

upgrade your current bass ..!! i used a VM fretless J body for a recent build ... and that build keeps evolving , and now is my fav 4 string ..!

mild degloss / relic on body , Ultra Jazz Split coils , CTS pots , Sprague cap , BadAss bridge , recently replaced Indo J neck w/ slightly used Blocked Bound Warmoth P neck , Schaller tuners ...

The TBird VINTAGE Pro is extremely versatile, and can cover just about any style with the right strings and pickup height adjustments. Easily one of the best values in new basses out there, and looks cool af.

… after I hurt my back a few years ago, I parked both of my MIA Fenders in favor of a 'lightly massaged' $150 (used) 2010 7lb Squier VM '77 Jazz that is extremely comfortable to play, and has covered any kind of gig I have thrown at it 'on the road' … it has made me as much $$ as any other bass I have owned in 45+ years of playing …

I have yet to find an Epi T-bird that I can live with, feel or sound. If you want reliable and roadworthy punk bass, the MIM P bass all the way.
