which bass should i buy?

I was kidding, I am very seldom going to offer a totally serious answer. I find that Ibanez is usually very common at the local big music store around here too, and like I said, they are pretty good instruments by and large if you like them. Generally a tad generic for my tastes, but I have played BTBs and ATKs in the store just fooling around and I would play one. Ibanez generally tend to have very comfortable necks if you prefer narrow necks, but for slapping they don't work for me. Probably because my technique sucks, but I find that for slap work I need a lot of room.

Generally, within a product line, yes, but not necessarily across lines. ie, an Ibanez Pointybass 700 is nicer than a Pointybass 400, but not necessarily nicer than the Curvybass 400.

Also, watch for used Ibanez deals... you can score some pretty sweet basses for very little money.

I have a BTB that I really dig. I've owned a couple others over the years, and they've all been pretty great. To me, the different Ibanez models are very much a matter of taste. There's a lot of variety in their product line.

I also am trying to be very unspecific to a model just because very soon this thread will be full of the "try it before you buy it/shop around/try this model/get what you like" posts which by and large are not all that helpful.

OP, before that happens. Remember, if you want a bass you don't have to want it for any good reason. It's your pick, and if you buy a bass solely on looks, you won't here me criticize. Check the classifieds if you think everyone picks the perfect bass every time.
