Working on some new stuff and can’t decide which bass tone I like better. Raw tracks, rough mixed. First one is with my Gibson SG loaded with a Novak BSDS and Stonewall bass P90. Second is with my stock Guild B301. Just wanted to see what some other bass players out there preferred. Thanks.

That’s not exactly an equal comparison, as the Gibson is a short scale, the Guild is full length, but, I’ll give you my utterly biased opinion(Curtis is over in the next neighborhood from me)…the Gibby has a sharper tone, which I prefer, and overall improvement from an original EB bass mudbucker(the ancestor of the SG bass, my first bass was an original ‘60 EB-O, which ironically was based on the slab LP Jr. guitar). No experience with this ‘SG’ descendant, though. I’ve also owned a 301, which was more Jazz Bass-like, an entirely different flavor, plus the 34” scale sustains/resonates differently.

The Guild, although I do like the way the Gibson narls its way through the mix, adds a little less typical bass sound and actually blends well with the heavy guitars but needs a little more body. The Guild works much better for the high part at the end. That interval almost sounds out of tune on the Gibson. Maybe something about the different scale lengths.

Cool stuff. Wish I could play with that much energy these days.👴
