I've been saving up for a while now for a Fender Deluxe Active Precision Bass Special, and now I have enough. But just a couple of days ago, I realized my current bass has 21 frets and that the P-Bass only has 20. So I looked for a different bass, and found the Ibanez SRX300/390. Anyway, thing is I can't decide between the 2...I like the Fender, but it doesn't have that many frets..I play mainly Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Green Day stuff...and other random things.

I'd rather have the Fender for the looks and the tone (I've heard lots of sound clips, and watched videos), but I'd rather have the SRX300/390 (I don't know the difference between them) for the frets..and maybe the pickups. The music stores I've been to don't have Ibanez basses (they're an authorized dealer, but they don't have them at the store), and only one has the Fender. So I can't try the Ibanez before buying.

What do you think I should get and why?

Ibanez SRX390 is about $899.99AUD, and the Fender is $1199.99

If you are planning on keeping your old bass, and the Fender does what you want as well as it seems, go for the Fender. You've made do with 21 frets so far, and if you really do need that last fret, use your old bass. If not, you can always bend at the 20th.... but, keep in mind you're a bassist, and in all likelihood won't be spending a whole heck of a lot of time up there.

I own the fender p-bass deluxe you speak of, and i love it. i havent played an ibanez id rather have over the fender. I am somewhat new to bass, but it plays and sounds great. i rarely ever use the p-bass pickup, i love the extra punch of the j pickup. When it comes to the fret situation; you just have to figure out how important those extra frets are to you... the gold pickguard is dope, too.

I don't think I'll be keeping my old bass, I'm leaving for America in July, and I plan on taking only one bass. I just want the higher frets to play some of the RHCP improvised jams...I was considering the Dirnt P-Bass at one point for the pickups.

bmsrv311: How are the pickups? I heard the Jazz pickup doesn't sound that great on its own :p

OH man... All I ever hear is how expensive basses are in Australia... Maybe while you're in America you can look for a bass, i hear a lot of people do that.

+1 , Its worth it.
Just take of the stickers of and make the case dirty and you wont need to pay the taxes either.

When I'm in America, I'm going to be staying there for...well..for a while (years). I'm going to get my amp there. My current bass is dead at the moment, there's no wiring at all. And it's just all messed up. I might just sell it to a friend and let 'em mod it up for their own use.

I voted for the Fender BUT now that I read that you want an SRX Ibanez-and you want an active bass. I say go with the Ibanez. I personally like the SRX 705, if you want 4 strings- GET THE IBANEZ SRX 700, OR SRX 500. Personally the SRX 700/705 IS SICK-

One major difference is that I feel an active Ibanez SRX outdoes an active Fender. I think Fenders are great stock passive basses. If you get a Deluxe Fender I'd tell you to switch out the preamp for an aguilar preamp-or something else. The preamp/pickups just dont do it for me. However P/J setup is my fav for bass right now. I own a MIM Deluxe Jazz and I was going to put new pickups, a new preamp and maybe a new neck-I had originally added a Badass Bridge II instead I'm gonna sell it and use the money to either pay off my Mesa cab or save up for a Spector Euro, Ibanez SRX 705 or a Peavey Zodiac DE Scorpio. What I'm saying is if you go active, go Ibanez not Fender. Heres the specs on the SRX 700 and 705
