Which Chromes for my VM Jazz Bass?

Alright, I know Chromes are a well-liked type of flats. But Which Chromes are 'the' chromes that'll generally mix well with my VM jazz bass? What is the 'standard' gauge?

All depends on what sound/feel you're going for....

Fat / smooth / dark: LaBellas or GHS Precisons
Warm but with some brightness: Chromes
Smooth & low tension: TI Jazz flats

I run GHS Precisions on my CV Jazz, because I want a fat old-school tone. YMMV.

It all depends what you're looking for....

Chromes don't come in sets of 45-105...but they do come in 50-105, which is what I consider their standard!

When I ran Chromes on the Jazz, I used 45 - 100. These were quite nice, but not quite the fat, dark sound I was after.

... as mentioned, guage becomes preference as much sound choice and feel... I have the ECB81 45-100's (Med lights) on most of my J's, but on my VM Jazz I have the 40-95's (Super Lights)... I really like the little nuances of the lighter gauge Chromes for the most part, and Duncan Designed pups really seem to work well with them for me ... it really becomes a try as you go sort of thing for preferences ... I have not used the 50-105's (Mediums), and dont really see the need to go there, and I have a set of the Custom Light Chromes (40-100) waiting in the wings if I ever get one of projects done ...

Edit to add: I just saw a thread on here where some folks are wanting a heavier gauge than currently available for Chromes ... I am really starting to appreciate the lighter gauge Chromes and will be trying to ween myself that way a bit more .. JMHO

I have the same bass, with which I've tried GHS precision flats (.50-.105) and Chromes (.45-.100). Gauge matters not as far as I'm concerned, although the tension these two sets exerted is almost identical. So be wary of this when using heavier Chromes.

I switched to Chromes because the GHS precision flats were a little too dark for the J bass pick ups. The Chromes immediately sounded worlds better when I put them on and they keep getting better with age. Not as smooth but they break in nicely.
