You should check out the Aguilar Tone Hammer. It's like a sansamp but, in my opinion, it's much better. Plus it's made by a great small company in New York, instead of a mega corporation in China. Check it out.

The two DI boxes you mention aren't very good and aren't clean. Get a Radial JDI or an Avalon U5

I think Sansamps are also built in NYC, and I would not describe Tech21 as a mega corporation...

You don't have to, but I've unscientifically found that DI's get dramatically better past the $150 mark.

Mostly less noise, but I also think the tone is generally better as well. Maybe it's less noise causing it to have better tone.
