Which (different) cabs work together?

Pretty much all of them will work together. How well they work together is a different matter.

Let's keep in mind taste is subjective, so different people will like a certain combination while others may think it sucks. So basically, IMHO it should probably be considered a try-it-and-decide-for-yourself type of situation.

Example:
I have an old GK 700RB/112 combo. 225W into the internal cab and 380W total with an 8 ohm extension. The combo by itself got the job done in a cover band, but as a player I found it frustrating. As I turned up, at a certain point the little rig would just get more compressed rather than louder. I didn't like the compression and I didn't want to blow the 12. The GK is fairly HiFi sounding, but gets lost in the mix fairly easily. You might say it has bedroom tone ;).

I have some old BFI cabs loaded with EVMs. BFI was sort of a garbage brand in the 80s. The cab design is too small for the drivers and the boxes were made from really low grade plywood with no bracing. They don't sound great, but they are fairly efficient. I would describe the sound as woolly, unfocused, and lacking any true lows (vintage).

I used one of the BFIs with GK combo. While the tone was not particularly great, I was much happier as adding the BFI gave the rig plenty of headroom. I actually got quite a few compliments on my tone with that rig .

I agree.

Let me clarify what I had in mind when starting this thread. Certain combinations of different cabs cause frequency cancellations and other weird phase-related issues. When I ask others to post combinations of cabs which work "well", my expectations is that others will post only the combinations which do not cause such phase-related issues (because in such a case the poster would probably not like the combination).

My aim is to create a list of possible combinations which could be used in the future by potencial buyers. Anybody considering to combine X and Y cabs will be able to search this thread to check whether somebody is using this combination without (phase-related) issues.

It goes without saying that there is no guarantee that two people will like the same things. Taste is subjective, as you stated. On the other hand, phase-related issues are not (subjective).

I understand what you're trying to achieve but if you have more than one speaker* you will have interactions between the speakers. Good or bad? Well, now we're back to personal preference.

*edit, even in the same cab
This. In the end, I feel this will be a fruitless exercise.

OP, good luck in creating this list. :)

There are numerous threads here on TB with favourite amp/cab combinations.

I don't understand why thread with favourite cab/cab combinations is such a big deal.

Yes, there are limitations. Yes, personal preferences are subjective. But the same applies to any music gear. Does it mean that any "Hit me with your favourite" (dirt/amp/chorus/delay etc.) thread is fruitless? I certainly don't think so…

I understood this from the OP. However, there is not universal agreement on which cabs sound great. Given that, how can we expect people to agree on which cab combinations work great.

I will go away now :bag: . Good Luck!

I'm glad I don't play with such loud groups I would need a second speaker. In the past I've played mixed cabs with mixed results. There will be no definitive list because most people think louder is better and a second cab almost always makes a rig sound louder. The sound tech and audience probably won't think so, but have fun. 😜

I don't

I expect each poster to post his/her own favourite combinations of cabs…

We don't have to agree

Good night. (It's midnight here)

Okay. My favorite combination is two or more GB1288T-UQ.

I am sure you have seen this image before.

They would not necessarily be my first choice with all of my amps in all situations. But IMHO they are good to great with all of my bass amps.

Here is what's hiding behind the grill:

I believe the GB115T-UB was designed to pair with the GB1288T-UQ, but I haven't tried the combination. Maybe @Wicked G will comment.

In general, the different GB speakers are designed to combine well within their series, the exception being the Focus and Contour series cabinets are interchangeable because they are essentially the same cabinet with the same drivers, tuning, etc. The cosmetics are quite different however. Same applies to the Subway models.

Also, you might notice a fleeting similarity of the UberQuad 1288 when stacked vertically to the Genzler bass array cabinets. We were working on this vertical array concept way back (maybe starting 20 years ago), including some PA line array models.

The QUAD and 115t sound great together and I remember one time thinking about maybe getting a second QUAD to replace the 115t to see how both QUADs would sound together.

Also thought about two UBER 115t's as well because I actually like the 115 a little bit more. But Andy pretty much told me that both cabs were designed to go together and to stick with what I already have. Not bad advice, I still have them even though they don't fit in my car anymore lol. But I still have them .

All my Bag End cabs (S15 I, S12 and 2-10) seem to play well together.

And so do the Phil Jones cabs as well. I've even intermixed both brands a time or two and it was fine.
