Which (different) cabs work together?

Can you offer a general statement regarding how speakers combine between different series and brands?

I suspect your answer may be "no, try it and see what you think."

And since people's tastes are hugely varied...

In the spirit of the OP's request, here are two Genzler cabs, but with different design goals. Per Jeff's suggestion, I turned off the tweeter on the bottom cab and they work very well together.

It's often a crapshoot, it may sound ok but it may not just as easily.

When combining speaker cabinets from different companies, it's always a good idea to test for phase compatibility. You don't want the cabinets to be out of phase with one another.

Polarity generally isn't the issue, most manufacturers have accepted that + is in fact positive and causes positive pressure when a positive voltage is applied.

The main issue is phase response due to the different tuning which can also show up in vastly different group delay measurements. It's not the group delay by itself, it's the relative differences.

True that modern manufacturers have adopted the same wiring standard.

You have to take into account the possibility of someone mucking with the wiring when changing speakers for example, also installing vintage JBL's that didn't conform to the +/- standard. Some vintage Ampeg extension cabinets had the phase reversed because of the way internal switching was done. A simple test can rule out a potential issue. Evaluating tuning related phase issues is certainly a lot more complex.

I have used a Phil Jones 8x5" cab along with a GK cxs 2x10 cab with good success.

I have used a Phil Jones 8x5" cab along with a GK cxs 2x10 cab with good success.

Tweeter off on the 2x10 so it's covering the lows and the pjb is more of a line array covering the mids and highs.

Every combination of amps and cabs did their job quite admirably.
