He used a '61 or thereabouts Jazz bass for Stadium Arcadium. He's been quoted as saying it's the best bass ever.
He's been known for playing Modulus basses with the Stingray styling. I.e. the pickup in the Stingray spot and a two band EQ. He pretty much plays with some sort of Stingray styled bass all the time live.
I think more than likely he just likes the Jazz bass body after taking his Jazz bass for a spin. However he wanted something with his preferred pickup and preamp pairing. I'm not sure he's endorsing Fender.
The dude is worth like a quarter of a billion dollars, so this is like going out and buying a big mac for him.
