Is this some kind of signature bass by Fender?
Pretty sure there was a thread recently about a custom order he did with the Fender custom shop.
There being a sig model coming seems like speculation.
More than likely he dug the Jazz bass body from his 60s model he used for Stadium Arcadium and decided to have his favorite pickup style and location added to something like that. Hence the custom shop order.

I wish I got one of those when I had the chance. Just as a fan/collector thing. I'm not even sure if they're good players.

In answer to your question antisyzygy, i played these a bit and i don't know they didn't do better. If memory serves Flea had an idea to pitch this as a beginners instrument without compromising playability or quality. This bass accomplished both those goals IMHO, the hardware was fine, especially the tuners, it played and sounded like a bass pure and simple and seemed very well built. Maybe people didn't see it as sexy? i don't know. I would have no problem recommending this bass to anyone.

It doesn't appear to be so. Lane Poor pickups have that distinct logo on the corner. I would be curious to know but my guess is Nordstrand or, more likely, Seymour Duncan since it is a Fender.
or he secretly swapped a Musicman pickup from his old Stingray? ;-)
Interesting. They go for a lot used when they crop up.
Ibanez and Squier seem to have that cheap but good market pretty handled. He probably would have been better off hitting a higher price point. Like Sire or something.
Wow that body looks quite thick! I know I'm asking for it by saying this, but I can't stand stickers on basses, especially new basses.

That definitely happens a lot with any gutiarist/bassist who's admired by musicians. A lot of bassists look up to flee so I'm sure he's getting some money from fender to endorse their stuff
He's an artist and likes change. It's probably that simple. I also wouldn't be surprised he buys basses (not like he needs the endorsement money). Many TB members switch way more than flea lol.
