Which is more suitable?

I want to buy a distortion and a wah pedal for my bass but would it just be better to buy a multi effects pedal rather than single pedals? If that makes sense?

Also, what kind of money could i expect to pay for decent pedals?

There's pros and cons to both approaches, although multi effects units are often better value for money. Howver, if you happen to grow to dislike one of the effects in your multi effects unit, you're stuck with it.

Live I like single pedals for easy tweakability(no menus/searching for the right patch, etc); wanking at home, I like a multi's ability to do tons of different things.

If you can find a multi-FX that does a distortion and wah effect that works well for you, cheaper than you can get from two pedals, then go with a multi.

There is a lot of snobbery about effects, and some people wouldn't put a pedal on their board if it's popular or if there's a more obscure version of it that they can pay twice as much for, but really its all down to what your ears tell you. Stuart Zender did the first three Jamiroquai records with Boss multi-FX. His tracks were probably piped through some tasty pre-amps on the way to the desk but still, those FX can't have been too bad.
