Which lead to ground?

I just got a 57 RI P pup for my squier J/P/J and the two leads are red and white. Normally I know black or green to be ground but I am not sure about which of the red or white would be the ground. I hooked it up white = hot and red = ground and it works. However, when I mix it with the neck Jazz pup it gets very thin and tinny (as in tin can) and volume goes right out the window. Oddly enough, it mixes with the bridge jazz just fine.

Any thoughts/advice?

As per Seymour Duncan wiring codes, I'd assume red is the hot. Have you tried reversing them?

The symptom described is a phase inversion of the two pickups, and what suggested Al just before me could do the trick

edit : now that I think about it, you're gonne have phase problems with 3 pickups what are the controls for pickups selection ?

Right now I just have 3 volume controls. I am expecting an audere Pre for christmas at which time I will be using two 3-way switches for pickup selecting. I had a reverend P in the middle of the two j's up until last night and it worked great. I will switch the leads and see what happens.

Is there a good resource for learning what Phase is and how it works online? Can someone here explain it to a laymen?

Edit: Switched the leads and it works great. White is hot and red is ground. I would still like some phasing info.
