Which nickel strings and why?

If you like DR strings you may want to try the nickel lo-riders or sunbeams. I use the former and love them.

I have experience with the DR Sunbeams and the R. Cocco nickelwounds. Both are great strings! On most instruments, I prefer the R. Cocco - a bit more tension, but some seriously big and centered sound. It's the darndest thing, but I swear that double/triple stops/chords are better in tune with the R. Coccos. If you are stringing throughbody on that Roscoe Beck, the taper on the B string, toward the tuning peg, will drive you toward the Sunbeams, which have more clearance in that regard -- and the extra tension on a body-through stringing puts the DR's in a very sweet place.

You can't go wrong with either of these!

I'll second on the R.Cocco nickels. They sound absolutely fabulous on my active Jazz Basses. I also like the Fender 8250's for my strings-through-body Fender basses. Both of these strings are similar in tone. I think the Coccos are more defined while the Fenders have better low end due to the .110 taper wound 'E' string.

Another vote for Lo Rider Nickels. I had used the stainless steels on a different SR5 a few years ago and loved them, but I just put the nickels on my current SR5 and they sound even better to me. Similar to the ss's but with a little less of the rinning in the high end.

If you ask me, I would say dunlop nickle-plated strings. I have a set of those strings on my ibanez bass and they sound fantastic. they provide warm, rich sounds, they have plenty of punch, and they're affordable. dunlop makes pretty good bass strings and I do recommend them.
