Which onboard preamp?

Look for the new Epifani onboard preamp. Mike Pope picked up a Fodera at NAMM and was raving about how good it sounded thinking it had his pre in it. He suddenly frowned when he found out it was the Epifani.

I have a 2001 American Standard Jazz. Natural Ash body, maple board. It has Bartolini Quadcoil pickups. I want to put a preamp in it. Which one do you think I should get with that setup? I prefer a 3 band.

If you choose "other" please specify.

J-Retro, without a doubt. The midsweep control is incredibly useful.
The Audere is ok too, but a bit more "polite".
If you want your bass to sound like it does now, with the ability to shaping the tone slightly around what you have now... The Audere will work.
The J-Retro imparts its own personality, which some people don't want, but I think it is an awesome personality and you can always find a great sound easily with it.

Reading up on the Audere ProZ and this stuck out to me: "The preamp gives your jazz bass that sensitive to the touch response which is so often missing from a passive jazz bass." I think that's the weirdest bit of marketing I've read in a long time, lol! I've never heard of anyone finding passive electronics "missing touch response". I have heard players finding active preamps as lacking dynamics or having unnatural compression many, many times however.

Does this strike anyone else as backwards? I'm not knocking Audere's pre, I have no doubt they sound great! Just that this premise is pretty erroneous, if not totally backward... ?

Audere. For the price, features, and tone...it's an absolute steal. I have one in my jazz bass and it is just plain killer. They are also super easy to install. All you do is screw down the pickup leads and screw the controls into the control cavity, everything is pre-wired for you.
