which orange cab for an SVT?

hey guys, i'm currently using an Ampeg SVT-VR and an Eden Nemesis 4x10 with a '74 Rickenbacker 4001. The nemesis is kind of cheap, and doesn't give me a very round sound; when I overdrive my head (basically every show) the distortion is a bit nasally too. I've taken my SVT into shops and tried it with other ampeg cabs, and the life is restored into my sound, so it's not my head. My eden kinda sucks for an all-tube head.

Im sort of interested in the Orange cabs for a few reasons. I've done a few past thread searches, and it hasn't really gotten me anywhere. I'm really interested in either the Orange sp4x10 isobaric or the standard Orange obc4x10. I'm kind of turned onto the Oranges because of their high quality build, awesome looks and generally smaller size. I don't really want a giant ampeg 8x10, especially since they're all assembly-line, foreign made now.

I don't know much about Isobaric amps, but according to Orange, the front two 10'' speakers i believe are sealed off from the rest of cab. The back two are ported. In theory, it seems to me that this would be the best of both worlds in a way, you could get that "sealed ampeg cab" sound that the ampeg 8x10s have with the two front 10's, and you could get the deep lows that the ampeg 6x10 and 4x10 get with the two ported 10s in the back. i could be totally wrong. A HUGE selling point for me is going to be how well the cab sound with my head naturally overdriven. At times it's more of a light, natural overdrive, and sometimes I completely drive it to a super-overdriven, crunchy distortion.

and orange's website has little to no info on both of these cabs. Is the obc410 sealed or ported?

I live 3 hours away from the nearest Orange dealer, but I still plan on going in and trying both of them out.

I don't have personal experience answers for you, but the bass player from the band Soul Control uses an Ampeg SVT-VR with a pair of the Orange OBC410 cabs. He uses a Fender jazz bass and a Malekko B:Assmaster distortion pedal. Killer sounding set up.

I think Soul Control might be playing in Seattle tonight if you want to check this combo out yourself.

if you go with orange cabs there really going to empty your wallet. everything they make with the only exception of there 810 cab are 8 ohms. so if you wanna just get one orange cab your looking at the 810 cab cause its 4 ohms. otherwise youd be looking at 2 of the isobaric 410 cabs or 2 of there 410's or 2 of there 210 isobaric cabs.

there 410 iso cab sounds really good but its also about 1000 dollars each, which means youd be spending 2g's on cabs which is to me alot just to be able to run orange cabs. on the otherhand though there iso 410 cabs sound really good and 2 of them stacked on top of eachother would probably sound killer. but its a pretty expensive endeavor.

I get the impression that part of the appeal of the Orange cabs is vintage looks too. If you can afford a new Orange cab then you might consider getting a Bergantino NV610 in tolex and having a vintage looking grillcloth grill made for it to capture the look.

I've seen someone on here do that to their NV610 with grillcloth to match their SVT and it looked great. And the NV610 sounds amazing with an SVT head, and probably isn't much heavier than the OrangeOB410.

you're saying that I would have to have 2 cabs, and I could not just run one? if the SVT needs a 4 ohm - 2 ohm load, wouldn't 4 ohms be the max that it could power, and 8 ohms would be too much? Sorry, i'm very ignorant with amp impedances,

Correct. Your amp needs to see either a 4 or 2 ohm load. A single 8 ohm cab would be a mis-match to the amps output transformer. Short term, no biggie, but over time, it can kill your amp. I'd pass on the Orange cabs, unless you always use 2 of them, (or 1 8x10). Plenty of great cabs to be had that'll match your amps impedance needs.

not to sidetrack the orange discussion, but you have heard that ampeg has a new and improved heritage model 810e that's usa made, right? have not played them myself, but those who have say the improvement is noticeable.
