Which pedal to create this specific fat overdriven tone??

What pedal can get close to the tone in "Dead and Gone" by the Black Keys?

I've had success doing their covers with a SouthAmpton Fifth Gear pushing a Sovtek Big Muff and I like to play around with the EQ in the mids to taste. I still use that even now that I have a Meatsmoke pre (but it does sound a lot nicer through the Ms tubes). I think a decent Muff fuzz with a pushed signal can come close if you don't have a big tube amp.

I've read that Dan uses a mustang bass through an old di with a Jensen transformer in it they say it's a cheap old di and I think they mentioned a studer board .they actually don't do "million dollar" studios. I'm pretty sure el Camino was recorded in Patrick's basementusing all analog gear ..and there new album turn blue ,although recorded at muscle shoals, was recorded with mark neil's gear shipped all the way in from California... mustang and ric bass,old transformer di,a ua 610 board ,and a studer summing mixer recorded onto hard disk....

I was able to get a similar tone with my Joyo California Sound with the drive at about 10 o'clock and the voice at around noon. I recorded it but I have a cheap mic and it didn't reproduce it very well so it doesn't sound as clear on the clip. The California Sound will do a fairly heavy fuzz type tone while maintaining the lows. Might be worth a try since they are so inexpensive.

I use a VMT and get a great similar tone. Blend about 60-70%, era on 90s, drive on very close to 0% (it still drives)

I would eventually like to try Bearfoot Blueberry, Barbershop, and the Pork Loin, all 3 I've heard great things.

IME, the BDPG did not stack well with other preamps. THat was just me.

This album is a masterpiece IMO btw. Love it.

Also, you would be safe getting close to what that tone sounds like. There was a lot of work done in the studio on that album so it'd be hard to mimic it exactly. You could get in the ballpark though. Lots of good suggestions so far.

finally got a chance to listen to the actual clips, flats and a blueberry or fuzzrocious dark driving will get you there, and the SA OFD probably will as well.
others will get you there, but those are the 3 that I have experience with.

I've added several more options to the poll thanks to people's suggestions.

I think my pbass with the tone knob rolled off could get the tone of the bass. Still searching for the overdrive pedal though. Keep the ideas rolling! All of the options listed on the poll are pedals that I have never tried, so I want to see what the general consensus is before I drop the money

This. Short scale, flats and Im almost positive thats a Crowther Prunes and Custard with both knobs at noonish and both switches to the right. If im wrong, which I very well may be, you could get that exact sound with the pedal and settings that I just mentioned. Very cool song by the way. I always dismiss Black Keys as a gimmick'd out retro band everytime I see them mentioned in a Green Muff discussion. But I think I might have to give them a chance now. Not that they need anymore fans, haha.
Everyone is mentioning some very cool pedals, Im definitely not opposed to anyone rockin a Dark Driving as its one of my favorite pedals ever. BUt there is that slight wah filter happening that im not sure you'd get from a straight up overdrive. Thats why Im convinced its a prunes and custard or maybe even a Blasteroid fuzz (or the original Earth sounds graphic fuzz since these dudes love vintage gear).

Mild overdrive and a pick with my jazz bass seems pretty darn close. I hear a straight clean signal and then added the overdrive on the recording, my overdrive pedal doesn't sound exactly like that as it is mushed more together, but heh close enough!

That 17% off is quite the deal! I browsed around and it appears they carry just about every brand of pedals I can think of other than a few very custom builders. Definitely going to start looking at their website more

Just ordered the Uber Bee. I figured it has more tonal adjustments than the Blueberry. Plus it was 17% off with free expedited shipping from prymaxevintage.com. I can update the thread when I get the pedal in.

In the meantime, suggestions still available for future readers or tone seekers!
