Which pre , CL or PRO

I do want one of these but cannot decide on which one.
I plan to use it mainly for blues,rock,top 40. No thrash metal or with a lot, if any effects.
I am leaning on th CL but am hung up on a decision

I had an Ampeg SVP-Pro. It was great for blues/rock stuff. It's very easy to dial in that classic SVT growl, but it can also do hi-fi clean for pop. The stock tubes can be a little noisy, but swapping them is very easy.

I have a solid state TE and an SWR Pre.

I bought a CL off one of the guys here and it's been a total love fest for about 6 months playing about the same stuff you seem to be doing.

I totally dig my CL. The dirt option of the Pro is cool, but I like to use pedals for dirt (easier to switch tones that way).

+1. The SVP-Pro can go from clean to really dirty. I usually set up mine for subtle overdrive: not clean, but not fuzzy or buzzy either. It's a big phat sound that works great for blues and classic rock.

Mine had been retubed by its previous owner, and has no significant hum or hiss.

I've never used the SVP-CL, so I can't comment about it.

The CL is all tone, very classic clean Ampeg sound. If you just want the clean tone, get it, cause it's great for it. I could get some overdrive out of it, but I had to dial it in. However if you want a bit of grit to lots of overdrive right through to blown out distortion, then the PRO is darn good at it and it does a great Ampeg clean tone as well, but there is a small difference between it's clean and the clean of the CL, but it's all Ampeg.

You'd be happy with either.

You are still allowed to own both right?

I haven't had an oportunity to try a CL yet. I've used a SVP-Pro for years and I'm happy with its sound but recently bought a SVT- 2Pro which also has the 300 watt tube power section and I will not be going back to just the preamp anytime soon.
