Which PU is 1?

Set the blend pot in the middle of its sweep. Wire up the cris-cross wires to connect the diagonally opposite lugs. One cris-cross will be the hot output of the blend, and the other cris-cross is earthed. To work out which is which, with your meter, find which cris-cross is short to the middle lugs. This is the hot output of the blend pot. The other cris-cross is of course, earth. (If it's an A/C type blend, the reading from middle to hot should be 10-15% of the pot's value instead of a short for MN pots)

Once you've worked out which cris-cross is hot and which is earth, then if you are looking at the pot with lugs towards you and shaft pointing up, the neck pickup hot wire should be connected to the gang that has the hot cris-cross to its right.

on a typical blend pot, if you wire the neck pickup to the set of lugs closest to the shaft you get the "normal" bass arrangement, where turning "up" gets you the neck and turning "down" gets you the bridge.
