These are my personnal "must have" (there are a lot more, but this is the basics...)

I was actually shocked to see some of the suggestions...
And didn't come across one Steely Dan!!

"Aja" Steely Dan (Chuck Rainey & Walter Becker)
"Upfront" David Sanborn (Marcus Miller-IMO, much better than his solo stuff-he kills that record)

My students would ask me what disc's to get. And I would suggest those two.
I would tell them:
"If you want to become a good contemporary jazz/pop/rock/R&B bassist, learn each one front to back. Not just the tunes, but how they groove."

i like hearing other teachers album suggestions....

personally i gave my students Jeff Becks Blow By Blow and Band Of Gypises...IMO they're the epitome of Groove, How to Support and be upfront, and be simple

+1

although i only got them last night ill DEFINATELY add them to the list
The Roots - Organix
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory

Heath, if you haven't already, check out People's Instinctive Travels in the Path of Rhythm(That's from memory?) and Midnight Marauders by A Tribe Called Quest. People's was their debut, then came Low-end, followed by Midnight Marauders.

All three are highly recommended.

a few more
Rhonda Smith - Intellipop....after a few more listenings this album really grows on me, seriously, its the first solo bassist album iver heard where theres been multi-tracked bass that doesnt interfere with anything....its a real nice pop/rnb album

Stu Hamm - Kings Of Sleep...everybody loves hamm

Vail Johnson - Says Who...some rather interesting songs and playing

Joe Satriani - Strange Beautiful Music
