Well, I don't know if you're looking only for audio or if you want video too. I also don't know if you're looking for the actual bands or if covers are ok, so I'll just make one sugesstion.
On either Youtube or Google Video, you can type int he name "Felipe Solano" it'll take you to videos of this guy who covered a heck of a lot of RHCP songs. You can totally hear his bass and he covers the songs very well. Since his bass comes out so clearly, it's really helpful for those that want to learn the songs.

For groups and songs:
Stone Temple Pilots: Interstate Love Song
Stone Temple Pilots: Sour Girl
Stone Temple Pilots: Creep
Radiohead: Creep
Stone Temple Pilots: Wicked Garden
Stone Temple Pilots: Dead and Bloated
Stone Temple Pilots: Plush
Stone Temple Pilots: Big Empty
Stone Temple Pilots: Wonderful
(Man, there are so many great bass lines in STP)
Metallica: The Unforgiven
Metallica: Enter Sandman
Metallica: Hero of the Day
Metallica: For Whom the Bell Tolls
Metallica: Orion
Metallica: Devil's Dance
Metallica: Of Wolf and Man
Metallica: Wherever I May Roam (Black album. Not sure if that is exact title)
Metallica: Nothing Else Matters
Metallica: Sad But True
Metallica: Enter Sandman
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Otherside
RHCP: Californication
RHCP: Around the World
RHCP: Danni California
RHCP: BloodSugarSexMagick
RHCP: Under the Bridge
RHCP: Can't Stop
Tool: Sober
Cream: Sunshine of Your Love
Cream: White Room
Cream: Swlbar
Kansas: Carry On My Wayward Son
Kansas: Dust in the Wind

Included in my list of "best albums for playing along with the bass":

Pink Floyd - Animals
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Beatles - Abbey Road

And these "best of" albums:

Rush - Exit...Stage Left
The Police - Every Breath you Take, The Singles

Primus - Frizzle Fry
The Roots - Come Alive
The Reverend Horton Heat -The Full Custom Gospel Sounds of
Death from Above 1979 - You're a Woman I'm a Machine
Buck 65 - Secret House Against the World
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley and The Circus Leaves Town
Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Sublime - 40 oz to Freedom and Sublime

Is this sposed to be essential albums, or essential bass albums, or essential albums that are also essential bass albums?

Oh and is owning practically the entire Metallica catalogue really that "essential"? ;)
The original idea was to list albums with good music, period.

I don't know about others, but I can't stand listening to a good bassline if the rest of the song is crap. It all has to go together.

IMO, of course.

John Paul Jones isn't getting enough coverage here.

The live album "The Song Remains The Same" is amazing. Without Page's multiple guitar tracks, Jones is relied upon to really fill the space. His bass parts are incredibly tasty. I dare say that Jones and Bonham are the highlight of that recording.

The two most important tracks are:

1. Whole Lotta Love: features several cool breakdowns with great bass grooves

2. Dazed and Confused: after Page stops playing with his bow the band improvises on some very funky progressions, and Jones lays down some very tasty bass parts.
