Which records more easily: Precision or Stingray?

I would’ve said P. However, I just cut a rough track with my friends, and my Ray worked better. It was just easier to dial in cut, growl, and lows. I did find that changing the drum kit in Logic’s Drummer did make different basses work better than others. It’s going to be another case of the right tool for the job. Context is key.
 
I more mixes than any other bass on Earth.... a P bass.

I love other basses. But if I were called for a recording session, given zero details about the music, and told to bring exactly one bass, I would flip a coin and grab either my P with rounds or my P with flats.

.....until recently. I now have a P bass with extras. I nails a P and then some. But sk.ce we're asking between the two, the P six days a week and twice on Sundays.

I am not surprised. If the music is aggressive or funky, the Stingrays seems to be the better choice, especially direct into the board.

My only issue with a Stingray in the studio has been the G string, which can notoriously be a bit anemic.

On those 'Rays where I have found the work-around, no issue recording with one.

But in general the Precision is a first-time, every-time sure thing.

I'm going only by my experience, but a P-Bass seems to be the #1 "Go-To" bass.

Any recording I've ever done, I've been asked to bring a P-Bass. IME the person in charge of the desk has always been able to get a good tone in very little time.

I don't own a StingRay, but I own an '01 Sterling. I've used it on a local recording project, and IMO it did a great job.

I've noticed that the majority of Engineers prefer a passive bass.

This being said, I haven't ran across a single Engineer who didn't like the sound of my Spector NS4CRFM with it's EMG P/J setup, - provided I used it on a song that required a more aggressive tone.
 
as a recording engineer that has recorded and mixed ... over a thousand songs, i can share my experience:

1) yes, the player is the main thing. not so much whether they are amazing players. but how much experience they have with recording. things like finger/string noise are a whole different issue in the studio vs on stage. it takes a lot more time to edit out string noise and in the studio time is money. the less labor intensive approach is to throw more processing at it -- like a de-esser, multi-band dynamics processor, dynamic eq or transient designer (behind a crossover) to try and deal with it. this kind of processing is hard to do without radically changing the character/dynamics of the performance.

2) often times, cutting a bass track that sounds good solo'd isn't the issue, it's setting up the mix engineer to be able to get the important qualities of the bass part to sit in the mix. the most cluttered frequency range in any mix is the midrange and in particular getting the right balance in the lower midrange (250Hz - 700Hz) is really key. for bass, you need a solid low end that somehow dances with the kick (and any low synth stuff) along with the part that translates on tiny speakers which is typically just above the lower mids (600 - 850 or so). for this reason, i think basses with multiple pickups are a bit trickier to capture in such a way that they will retain what the mix engineer needs. depending on how the two pickups may be balanced there's some phase cancelation (you can look up the 3:1 rule that comes into play when recording drums) and as a result the frequency spectrum is kinda choppy vs. a single pickup which is like using a single microphone on drum kit -- everything is represented because nothing is being cancelled out by combining multiple mics that have slightly different phase variations on the kick or snare. with J basses it's kind of part of the sound we are used too -- a bit hollow -- can be a bit aggressive -- but retains the lows and the highs. again, that midrange can suffer in such a way that all the processing in the world won't give you the stuff you need in 600 - 850 to get the melodic aspect to sit in a mix.

3) the issue with active instruments can be headroom. not so much needing or wanting more or less but how the preamp and the resulting chain be it amp or DI reacts to the output. every buffer has a "tone" that interacts with everything else. some chains will react with a "splat" that might come across live at all. so in the studio, it's always nice to have the option to bypass the active or use a passive bass in case you run into this.

i have a whole bunch of basses in the studio including a bunch of P's because i also like to be able to offer things that help us get closer to what we're going for with each tune with less processing. i want the rough mix to have the character we want and not leave it to the mix for it to all gel.

so my simple answer:

one more thing: do your mix engineer a favor and always mult and record a completely dry DI signal (that doesn't clip). they can use this to reconstruct any string-to-string inconsistency and also use it to "key" other dynamics processors. i always set up dynamics to duck the bass when the slap of the Kick hits or Snare or a Vocal transient hits. that way i can keep the bass LOUD and it doesn't fight with the K, S or Vox.

A good engineer on a budget with time constraints is probably not interested in performing miracles with your bass.

Good point. My experience is more time gets wasted by the players themselves than a good engineer fixing thing. If a bass is in tune, and the strings are in decent shape, it should’t take a good engineer much time at all to fix most tonal abnormalities.
 
I've not recorded much with a Stingray, but have with jazzes and Precisions.i will say the last album I recorded was with a Spector, which was very tricky for the engineer. I eventually went back and recorded some of the tracks with a P bass, where I think he was more at ease and comfortable with.

The mids with a p bass tend to find their place between the kick and guitars with less issues. The thicker growling humbucking sound of the Stingray just takes a different place in the mix to come out. I've worked with engineers that can work that sound in wonderfully, so there are a lot of variables to contend with.

All else being equal, my nod is still going to go with the P bass. I never hit a studio with out one.
 
I think it depends on the bass, player and recording gear. A pro studio should be able to get the best out of any bass unless it's a true POS. I've recorded using many different basses none of which was a P Bass. I used an Ibanez SR505 for years. Then a Tobias Deluxe 5. I've used several different jazz basses, some active and some passive. I've used a Lakland JO5 and a 55-01. They all sounded good and I had no complaints from the engineers. Just did a band demo at a school that used an outdated DAW using the Lakland. I'll also say...the P may be the best 'rock/country' recorded tone. R&B, jazz and funk.....all sorts of basses were used to great results.
