Which short scale to buy?

I have several short scales including a Landing which I really love and is my main bass. I have the Lakland short scale which was mentioned above and is also a very nice bass. I recently bought a Fender P Jr which is a little smaller than 30" around 28" and I put in a Lindey Fralin PU and love the sound for certain things plus a few of others. You should also check out Birdsong. They have a great rep and I think his C bass might be my next purchase. Need to sell a few things first.

I'm reasonably certain that current Gibson Les Paul basses are all long scale. The old ones were short scale.

If you like Gibbys, SG is back although I don't know whether it's available in Canada yet. in the USA it's around $1300.

As for Hagstroms, the new one are not bad for MIC, bud I'd much rather have an old one...

Happy hunting.

The Memphis Les Paul semi hollowbody is a short scale. I owned one of the full scale Les Pauls in ebony a few years ago, beautiful basses.

Same here. I love my SG Bass. Only short scale and only 4 string I currently have.

It sounds like you may have a pretty decent budget? Why not go custom? Birdsong, Tom Clement. There are several people who could make you exactly what you want. Unless you want a production bass.

I've been thinking about a 32" scale 5 string fretless and Tom Clement is the guy for that. Just need to stop spending money on other stuff... :help:

If he knew exactly what he wanted, he would be here asking us for our opinion!

I have reasons for needing short scale as well, and have tried many, and owned a few.

I like the Gibson SG basses. They are super light, 30" scale, and real comfy.

Never played a birdsong, but have heard great things about them, and am gassing for one. He only makes shorties I think, and has some under a grand. They look sweet. Luthier in Texas.

kiesel has their headless Vader model that you can spec 30" for no additional cost. You can also chamber the body, choose light wood species, and pay an up charge for them to select the lightest boards for you, if weight is also an issue.

Theres a lakland skyline hollowbody ss that looks real nice as well.

Lately im all about headless shorties though. Great balance, lighter, but the main reason is that even reaching for the tuners is painful, so having the tuners at the bridge is fantastic.

Good luck with your search!

You really can't go wrong with a Gretsch Electromatic unless your budget allows for a lot more investment in the bass. I guess there is a sweet spot between GAS and the long term satisfaction of your purchase.
