which solid state ampeg?

It rather *does* defeat the purpose of the whole "Ampeg" thing to get a SS head...

Besides, isn't their current "new" production rather... Bad? I've read *nothing* good about "Loud"...

My guess is that the OP is thinking of buying something from MF having never heard or played it. I hope I'm wrong.

buying used from a music shop in seattle, my friend (the intended purchaser) is going to try them out this week.

Total ISH, I'm an AMPEG guy and wouldn't consider having any of those amps taking up space. Tell your buddy to go look for a an SVT-3PRO and he's done... No matter what the price I wouldn't waste my money on a B series or SVT hundred series SS amp.

Stop screwing around.

I've owned and giged an Ampeg B2R for 8 years and its a solid workingmans amp. The last gig I did another bands bassist played an SVT 350 through a 4x10 and It sounded almost exactly like mine. The MIA B2R's and SVT 350's are solidly made amps as compared to the later import versions. My amp is 10 years old and I have had zero issues with it whatsoever. If that says anything about build quality.

IMO (& having played all of the amps that i'm about to mention)...If you want to stay Ampeg, & SS,....you will have to check the 'used' market in order to get a decent sounding SS ampeg. (pleeeeeease stay away from the (esp. Asian made) B Series amps that came out in the last 5 years..i.e...B2RE)
Best bet, is to look for an Ampeg Porta 800 (US made {St Loius} -2004)..you can probably find one on Ebay for under $500 (...and it's all 'ampeg' when pushed....)
& if youre really in a Vintage hunting mood,...i suggest you check out the tone on these: B40, V6-B

I owned a svt 350 for about a year, USA made, 90s era. I sold it to my friend for 400US$ because I needed the money and didn't need a backup at the time. I borrowed it for a month recently and returned it a couple of weeks ago and had a chance to experience and noodle around with it again... and I can say it gets loud through my powerhouse 1000. It does sound a bit sterile compared to my b15n and mesa400+, but it sounds decent and for a working mans amp its built well and sounds ok. It seemed to like my passive basses better than my active ones, especially my custom graphite necked jazz.
