Who do you think has the perfect tone?

The sound Dave Holland got with Miles was pretty extraordinary to me (ex. Isle of Wight 1970).. I emailed him to try and find out his secret, all he told me was that he used some kind of fuzz-wah..
Yeah, there was a very brief nanosecond during his career when he had a fat punchy respectable bass tone -- check out Bruford's Gradually Going Tornado -- but that's a tiny oasis in a desert of crap.
This whole thread is weird. I think there are a lot of bassists whose tone is/was perfect for a particular situation...but I can't imagine that same tone being even remotely perfect for some other context or some other player.
+1 to Jaco especially the self titled album, also +1 to Bernard Edwards and Nathan East.
It does depend on the type of music, I like Nathan East's big thick tone with Four Play as I like John Deacon's focused low-midrange tone.
One sound that really stood out for me was from a bassist Emory Gordy, not so mutch tone setting but the way he was using a lot of fret contact to create a growl through the bass walk up's, and notes he wanted to add impact to.

I just started listening to Biffy Clyro and James Johnston has a really good rock tone. I also noticed Matt Smallbone, bassist for Michael W. Smith, he's got an awesome deep and clean tone.
For me, my tone is perfect. Fresh heavy gauge Chromes on a P/J bass with the J pickup rolled in just enough to add some of it's mids, bi-amped through a clean bass rig and a Orange tube guitar head. It gets me a flatwound thump with a Chris Squire-like edge on top of it, perfect for my band where I have to switch between playing distorted powerchords, syncopated fingerfunk, and melodic leads. There are a lot of bass tones that I think are perfect though, I think it really depends on what musical situation you're in.
