Who is with me?

So approaching my 40s, I wonder if anyone else is in this same boat as me..

I do not own an Iphone or a Smart Phone. I have a flip phone. I can call people on it. They can call me back. Cool idea for a phone, eh?

I do not have TIVO. Wouldn't even know how to work it.

I do not have digital cable (I barely watch basic cable.. cept on Walking Dead night!).

I prefer listening to cds in the car, rather than scanning an ipod (although I do use an Ipod at the gym... running with a disc man or walk man is even too much for me!).

I prefer books to ebooks. Nothing like having a physical BOOK in your hand. I love the smell of the pages (esp if the book is old..haha). I love hearing and feeling the page turn. Plus, its easier on the eyes. IMO.

I am totally not judging any tech fans out there, but just wondering is anyone still old school like me?! It would also be interesting to know if any of you younger folks in your 20s prefer the "archaic" way of life.

I am 35, and I work with high-end technology for a living. I have a smart phone and I use it for texting and web browsing more than for voice calling. I love the feel of books and the crisp dryness of paper in new hardback books. I also own a nook for when I'm not at home, and I don't feel like dragging several inconveniently large book-cases around with me.

I also don't have TIVO or digital cable. I have basic cable and I'm considering cancelling it. I do, however, have 55mbit cable modem internet.

I like listening to music in the car, but I don't listen to CDs. My car stereo has a USB port for flash drives, and all my music is on that. I don't like listening to portable devices, because good headphones are too big and too expensive. I also listen to SiriusXM's classical and jazz channels in the car.

Only got a smart phone recently (February)

Don't have it, too expensive for what it is/how rarely I watch TV anyway right now.

I don't know if my cable is digital or not. Thinking of dropping it and going with terrestrial tv, cable prices have been creeping up and it just doesn't seem worth it anymore.

Not a huge fan of CDs in cars, always seems to chew the disc over time (dare say it'll depend on the player). MP3 player either into aux port or using a tape adapter wins out for me.

Prefer real books here too. eBooks readers give me a headache, not to mention I can still pick up most paper backs used for less than eBook equivilants (obvious exception is classic texts which are free).

I'm 26.

I'm 27
I'm with you on all of those.
My phone is technically a smart phone, but it's 4 yrs old. I talk and text on it. Although hardly anyone ever calls me. I might just get rid of it.
I'll read an ebook, if it's some weird occult stuff I can't find.
I'm getting rid of my old tv. I might get a flatscreen at some point. If I ever decide to pay for cable. I play dvds on it.
My computer pretty much replaced everything TV related haha

I am 49 and work in IT for a well-known ticketing firm. I got a Android smartphone, but not one of the new ones with a ginormous screen. That just looks stupid holding one of those mini tablets up to your ear. Mine is a 1st gen Droid Incredible, rooted, jailbroke and running a software version Verizon won't push. I like the customizability of Android. I can even place and receive phone calls when there is only Wifi available. If I had to, I could ditch Verizon today, and barely miss a thing.

The high tech device I eagerly seek is a smartphone with no screen or buttons, entirely voice controlled. But not even Apple's Siri is that smart yet.

I don't use bluetooth earphones for taking calls, though. However, my Sennheiser MX450 bluetooth headphones are simply amazing for listening to music. I can listen for hours without any MP3 fatigue. It must have a BBE sonic maximizer in it or something like it.

I'm 36 and love the tech movement. I love the idea of physical books, and am an avid reader, usually knocking out a book every other week. However, the physical storage associated with that habit makes e-books my choice of format.

Sure, I could get a library card. However, I don't want to go to the library. The last time I went I was turned-off by the environment, the noise, and the "clientele", e.g. homeless folks looking for free A/C. Also, my mother, some of my friends, and I share e-books through the lend function of our Color Nooks. I like that. My folks live in Indiana. Handing my mom a physical copy of insert title isn't possible. Same with a lot of my out-of-area friends.

I have my iPhone. An iPod. An i7 Apple MBP (used for recording and whatnot). An Apple Desktop. Two DVRs. An XBOX 360 (used to also have a PS3, but traded it in). I have a "tech-heavy" system in my truck, along with SIRIUS, and voice-cmd phone and music capabilities with the sync system. I'm focused on driving and telling my truck to play Dark Side of the Moon versus fishing around a CD case at a stoplight.

You name it. I'm into it -- for the ease of use, convenience of storage, and archival aspects (e.g. external HDDs or cloud-based). I haven't bought a DVD or CD in years. I hate jewel cases. I hate boxes. I hate clutter.

I do have some very nice leather-bound editions of books. I have a great set of books my folks bought me when I finished my MS. However, I find myself being very selective of the physical books I want to buy, and bring into my house. The shelves in my den are privileged spaces set aside for great books; the vast majority of which are hardbound (I don't like paperback). From that aspect, I like having the physical book. I'll take a 1st edition The Catcher in the Rye over the e-book version. But, for everyday recreational reading I find no reason to bring that into the house. Another library I went to recently said they don't even accept donations anymore. What am I going to do with the old, paperback books I don't want to have around the house? The future is now.

So approaching my 40s, I wonder if anyone else is in this same boat as me..

Im 27, 28 this summer.

I do not own an Iphone or a Smart Phone. I have a flip phone. I can call people on it. They can call me back. Cool idea for a phone, eh?

I do have a smart phone. I make calls, texts, check facebook, and use it as an mp3 player.

I do not have TIVO. Wouldn't even know how to work it.

Same here.

I do not have digital cable (I barely watch basic cable.. cept on Walking Dead night!).

The house I live in has cable, but I dont watch it.

I prefer listening to cds in the car, rather than scanning an ipod (although I do use an Ipod at the gym... running with a disc man or walk man is even too much for me!).

Half my CDs were stolen, luckily they were backed up on my laptop. I mostly listen to the radio in the car, but will put on a CD (if I still have it) or plug my phone into the car stereo to listen to mp3s.

I prefer books to ebooks. Nothing like having a physical BOOK in your hand. I love the smell of the pages (esp if the book is old..haha). I love hearing and feeling the page turn. Plus, its easier on the eyes. IMO.

No eBooks for me. I like real books, buying them used online, and putting them on my shelf when Im done with them.

I am totally not judging any tech fans out there, but just wondering is anyone still old school like me?! It would also be interesting to know if any of you younger folks in your 20s prefer the "archaic" way of life.

Im about half with you, and 12 years your junior. Correlate what you will!

Flip phone, never sent a text and zero desire for a phone that's a piss poor clone of my home PC. --- CHECK! (I do not discount the usefulness of it when traveling, I've just never had so many occasions pop up where it would have helped to persuade me to buy one)

I don't pay for or own cable, but I have a cop out. My gal does. She pays for it out of her "mad money" and does indeed have TiVo. I watch perhaps 3 hours of TV with her ( our cooking shows or Anthony Bourdain's various shows ) during first runs a week. My primary TV experience is from my PC in the form of Netflix. Movies, Top Gear and any number of discovery, history, military channel shows are on the list. Still it only occupies about 2 or 3 hours of my time in a given week.
So, it's a CHECK, but it's translucent :D

I don't own an ipod. I'm not opposed it's just not needed. I have a home gym and use Grooveshark ( my PC again ). CHECK!

I LOVE the idea of ebooks. I just can't force myself to do it yet. I have SO many books. I keep every one that I buy. It's a hoarding thing I guess. There is something about the feel, look and smell of a very old book that cannot be replaced by the ebook. Still, this is the one that will fall out of everything on your list. I'm a voracious reader. CHECK! for now...

What's odd, for me, I consider myself a technophile. I enjoy what all the doo dads and gizmos bring. I'm just a cheap basstard who only spends money on improving my PC ( never ending ), my youngest daughters ever growing PS3 collection ( my girl is a gamer... like her pop ) Horseback riding with my daughter or traveling with my Gal.

I have no tivo, watch all my tv streamed over the internet, love my iPhone, use my iPhone for music in the car ect. I love technology. The only thing that I agree with you is books. I love books, they are awesome. I love the way that they feel in my hand, they are easier to read, the leather on a well bound book is amazing. As for ebooks, I have taken to finding them in PDF, printing them and binding them myself.

I'm 43. I love my technology.

- Smartphone - check. Droid X. I love the big screen.
- Tivo/DVR - check. My wife and I use it one way or another daily. Not being able to pause or rewind live TV is frustrating to me now.
- Digital TV - check. Dish Network feeds three different locations in our house.
- My in-home WiFi network is configured so that I can stream music from my iPod to multiple sets of speakers in my house, and I can control each of them remotely with my iPod. My next step is to set up wireless video feed from my desktop computer to our family room TV.
- Although I read a lot when I was young, it's been years since I've read a book for entertainment purposes. Most of the books I read these days are technical books related to recording and mixing.
- My one anti-technology twist is vinyl records. My iPod stuffed with 5000-ish songs is extremely convenient, but I love the ritual and sound of spinning vinyl.

I'm 23 and I use a smart phone. I have found that I love being able to look something up if I can't remember it, I can make a make-shift grocery list or to-do list on my phone, or add something to a calendar in my phone so that I don't forget about it. Of course, I go back and all these things to the paper versions, but it's nice not having to carry all that. It's also good if I forget to bring a book or something to read to a waiting room.

That said, I don't spend a lot of time on my phone, compared to some people I know, and I'm glad about that. Probably because I don't have facebook, which is what everyone is always checking on their phones.

I still read real books, and prefer them, but the kindle e-reader is really impressive. Not the backlit tablets or anything which are hard on my eyes, but the one with the e-ink looks almost identical to a book. My mom has one and it's pretty great, especially for travel.

Have a Tivo, love love love it. I could watch only what I wanted when I want. If I miss Jeopardy, no big deal. If I can't stay up to watch Jon Stewart, I watch it in the morning with my coffee. Since those and two other shows are really the only things I follow, the DVR makes it super convenient. And the best part is I don't have to watch any commercials.

But, even though I use this technology, I really don't do a lot of different stuff on it. There's nothing I enjoy more than being outside hiking or walking with my dog, or sitting out with a good book.

I actually do appreciate a few technological advances though, in all fairness..

The Ipod/mp3 player... great for my runs, and going to the gym. If I ever saw a guy or girl at the gym with a WalkMan or DiscMan I'd flip. Even the old farts at my gym use Ipods.

The GPS- I admit, this is actually useful. I grew up in the days of maps, and later Yahoo Maps.. and I would get lost no matter WHERE I went back in the day.... this is more of a useful necessity for work as well, when I travel.

The flush toliet. Because let's face it.... outhouses and slop buckets are only fun in the warmer months.

Agreed. I notice a decrease in stress when I put my phone away and enjoy nature, someone elses company, etc.

That said, I love my iPhone. I can do all the booking/promoting for our band, update my schedule, make lists for grocery shopping, look stuff up, find hotels/restaurants/etc, get directions in a matter of seconds, take HD video/audio (which makes recording new songs at practice very easy)...the list goes on and on. The biggest plus is being able to communicate effectively without ever having to talk to anyone (I take calls all day long, so unless we're dating or we have business to discuss, I'm probably not answering my phone). Plus being able to play Grand Theft Auto when I'm bored at work is pretty cool too. :)

I fear with the smart phones and texting we will evolve into beings with thumbs shaped like pinkies, eagle eyes ( great singular focus, poor peripheral vision ) and camel humps ( from all the walking with the heads down staring at the device in their hands.
I observe most people on the sidewalks, in the malls, in restaurants just staring into their hands. Seems like a lot of the world around folks is passing them by. It's creating an ADHD culture. If the device beckons ( a text indicator ) the person will stop everything to look at it. This includes conversations with a person, driving, eating ... bathroom business... in a movie theater.

Just an old fogey observation :)

46, have a "smart" phone(not really that smart, or useful), no MP3's, they sound like crap, I much prefer CD's, No video games, outgrew those in high school, TIVO/DVR? why? I rarely ever watch tv, talk about a vast wasteland(as bad as hollywood). Digital recording? Nope, Analog, using mics and room ambience, playing in time and singing on pitch.....hmmm imagine that these days....LMAO Ebook? what would I do with all the extra space if I got rid of all of my book cases. not my thing, I like page turning, and real printed pages. Probably not likely to change before death, of course, I still have a great collection of Albums(vinyl to the children in the room), and tube Television, no HD, no 3D, no 5.1 or 7.2 or whatever, just common stereo. Oh yeah and I have very large speakers wired to my 1990's stereo system....of course the audio accuracy is far greater than any mini speaker techie could tolerate these days....LOL Long Live Heavy Class A Amplifiers also!!!!
