I'm 36, my phone is a "dumb" phone, and I don't have cable (or any channels, for that matter). I have a 10-year old desktop PC, and I haven't had a game system since the Atari 2600. I have about 900 CDs and about 300 vinyl LPs, which I listen to regularly at home, and I only read books on paper.
On the other hand, I do have a 120 GB iPod Classic with about 14,000 songs and a couple hundred podcasts on it, and it is on my person at all times when I'm out of the house. I also have a Roku box to stream Netflix on my TV.

ESPN radio and our local "The Fan" sports talk radio is the all that's on in my vehicles or here at work. I stream music at home.
Digital recording does not necessarily exclude mics, room ambience, or playing skill. An analog sound converted and stored in a digital format does not immediately negate the skill required to generate and record the sound.

I'm over 40 and I'm happy in the 21st century. The things that I like about the 80s and 90s don't have anything to do with the low-tech life. I like my mp3s and my iPhone and my Netflix and my eBooks and my laptop and all that new stuff.

Early-40s and we haven't had a television set or cable television for eleven years now. I got tired of storing books and CDs, so everything is digital in the house now - well, still have about 100 records and a record player that does get some use. We go through about 4 books every week, so trying to keep them was problematic. When we couldn't give them away fast enough, we went digital.
Had 3000 CDs but digitized them all, then boxed them, and put them in storage.
Started doing internet work in the early-90s, and now work for an app startup. As soon as I can convince my wife, though, would love to get a place in the country and not worry about emails and the rest. Not anti-technology at all, but find it takes too much of my energy to keep up with it, the older I get.
I do love being able to go on vacation, though, and just being able to take a single device that has all music and reading material.

In my 50s now and I am with the original poster and maybe even less wired. I use a pre pay Samsung TracFone and don't send or receive texts. I have a seven year old IBM laptop running XP and hardwired to relatively slow DSL. Just don't really need wifi, or high speed gaming bandwidth. No TV or cable bills. I can stream pretty much anything that's on TV over the web anyway, or at least find streams of almost any episode of any TV show ever. And when the US feds shut down these streams, two more come into existence. A game of Whack-a-Mole that cannot be won. I have ESPN streaming on another tab as I type this, probably from some guy's server in Finland, for all I know (and I live less than 100 miles away from ESPN studios).
I have a couple of compact digital cameras that outperform any smartphone I have seen in terms of quality and resolution of the pics and videos. I have never had the urgency to paste a picture to my facebook page sooner that it takes me to get to my PC and upload it from my camera.
I am cheap. I cannot believe the amount of money some of my friends spend on all this stuff every month. And I like my local library a lot, probably because I live in a rural area where it is not a refuge for the homeless, even though we do have a small homeless population. Our police station is literally 200 feet from the library, so that probably has something to do with it.
I spend a total of less than $75 a month for home phone, DSL, and my cell phone, combined, and I never miss any sporting event or any other thing. And while I do have a Facebook page, I have always been inclined to try to keep my private life private. Things such as Twitter and texting and frequently posting to my Facebook wall are just all opposite from the direction I am headed. I prefer to lay low.
Still playing my '72 Fender P into a tube head from 1971 that weighs 70 pounds and is about as big as a 2 x 10 cabinet. One of my cars is a 1958 Mercedes, which I drive a lot and runs great. It doesn't even have an AM radio in it much less an iPod dock. So I guess it all sort of just me being locked in the past in a lot of ways.
When I was in my 20s I looked at guys in their 50s and said to myself, "I'm never gonna be like that" (so out of touch with the mainstream of the moment). Now, I'm just like that. Time waits for no one.

I don't like the phone, but I like being accessible if I am needed. I am not so deluded to think I am that important tho, and especially not because I have a "kewl" phone...it's not the pinnacle of human technology like some make it out to be...that said, I have an android. basic, stripper no frills, can check my emails, stream a vid, text the wife and kids, and make phone calls, even tho I hate the phone...so much so I gave up landline waay back.
I have Netflix and Hulu, almost as good. I am not a slave to programming tho, I don't like t.v. all that much. I watch it passively and get riled by the bad advertising, but that's about it...

Ah, another use for my phone, it plays music. My current vehicle doesn't even have a stereo (my car is crap and my commute 2.5 minutes), but if it did, it'd be my phone plugged in, my iPod plugged in, or thumbdrives, like when I take the Wife's car.
I love books for the same reason, and rarely read more than one at a time, but the convenience of my Kindle is awesome. But, i honestly could not tell you where it even IS right now. I just looked. Hmm.
Not so sure it's a matter of "old school" so much as simply not having a use for it, and that is totally cool too. I am half-with ya, half-not it seems, but even on the stuff I am not on board with I would not find myself lost without... portable music and my phone? the mainstays. I like the consolidation of content, and the reduction in clutter in the house. That is appealing.

39. Bought 2 ipods for the wife and I last year for running. We ran the 13.1 miles, ipods are still in the box. I am trying.
I listen to Sirius in the car, Pandora at home. I like random bands in the genre I want to hear, not choosing specific songs.
I like my digital cable and dvr as I don't like commercials.
Blackberry for work, no apps, only calls, emails and texts.
When I read, it's paper.
I prefer a Studer, but settle with a macbook and Logic.
No twitter, no spotify, no angry birds in my future.

Ditched the flip phone years ago. Recently upgraded from older iPhone to latest. Comes in handy all the time. It's fun too.
No TiVo, but DirectTV DVR for years. Are you kidding me, no commercials? No brainer. I can't count the ways this thing maximizes my limited time and interest in television programming.
DirectTV. NFL Package. There is no substitute. Totally enjoying some of the Showtime programming lately. Californication is freaking LOL hilarious. Shameless, is, Shameless!!!
XM in the car, or CDs burned to the HDD. Rhapsody on the iPhone (Bluetooth to car stereo) or iPad anytime I want just about any rekkid I might want (except, of course, AC/DC, whose CDs I have uploaded to iTunes, and which reside in the car, well, because, hell yeah they're worth the extra effort!)
Don't miss buying a hunk of paper one bit. iPad!
Totally not judging you Old Schoolers. I lived plenty of life without, I just don't see the point in doing it now that I don't have to. I'm 48. When I think back to when I was 18, or 28, or 38, and think about where i was, what I was doing, and what I could have done then with what is available to me now technology-wise, it boggles my mind. Advancement in luxury, yes indeed. Life altering technology, no question.

I have about 60 hrs of shows on my dvr. Austin city limits gets recorded every Sat. Classic Albums on VH1, Game of Thrones, etc gets recorded and stored without any effort. There is never nothing on TV when I want to watch it.
The smart phone will soon be a necessity like the internet. You can't apply for a job at most companies without internet access. It's best to get used to it now, so in a few years you won't be stuck at a gas pump without a phone to wave in front of it to turn it on.

I was against the e-reader thing for awhile. My wife gave me one and I never used it until one day I was bored at work on a weekend and I ordered the local newspaper on it. I've never looked back. I never have nothing to read. i get Maxim magazine in color every month. Yesterday I maximized Jennifer Love Hewitt"s breasts until they filled the whole screen.
I'd say that's pretty cool.

Recently got a smart phone as it has become a necessity for me.
I watch maybe an hour of tv in a week and that's Nat Geo or something like that. I prefer lying in bed and watching my favourite series on my laptop.
I listen to radio in the car, only my favourite station. ipod? I wouldn't buy any other brand than CREATIVE and I would never leave home without my ZEN.
Nothing like feeling the smell of an old book while turning the pages.
If I can't find a book, then I'll get the e-book and I'd like that printed. The less I look at a screen the better.
I'm 27, and I too like old school.
I grew up without the Internet. No one had access to much of anything. Yellow Pages and the local library...barely passable. No answer machines, etc. All the stuff we take for granted now. Even during college it was a mighty struggle to gather enough good material even in a University library to write a serious paper.
OTOH, my wife returned to school from 1996 through 2002. She rarely went to the library. We ordered books and articles online. She contacted people across the US for research papers. We picked up a Brother laser printer/copier/scanner/fax in 2000 that is still going. Need 20 collated copies of a 20 page paper? No problem. She even used a courier service to deliver completed research papers from our house to the university when she didn't have time to make the 40 mile round trip. Found the service on the 'net.
I bought my first computer in 1980 and first cell phone in 1985. I've never looked back. I was on AOL soon after, modem and all. I had hands free speaker cell phone that I used to support my business clients. Couldn't make it without it since I made a living for many years installing business accounting software. So I had to be up on technology.
Although I don't have the latest smart phone now , my cell phone is smart enough for GPS, internet, music player, etc. All of us text all the time. We capture photos and message them regularly to multiple people, especially my 84 y.o. dad who lives a couple of hours away. Keep to do lists. Capture ideas that usually would be forgotten. Use the phone as a recording scratch pad which I then email to my laptop.
We time shift with multiple TIVO's for about 9 years now. Watch what we want when we want to. A world of difference. The "good old days" are mostly old in many respects. We also get Sonic streaming music via DirecTV and have several favorite stations that we listen too. I have a couple of 15/1 extension speakers in my patio that sound great while spending time in my backyard for BBQ's and such.
I own vinyl albums, cassettes, CDs, hard/paper back books, still subscribe to paper magazines and newspapers but all that is going by the wayside. They take up too much space and create clutter and collect dust bunnies. I think a couple of eReaders are in store in the near future.
If you look at all the tech stuff like tools in a tool box, it really demystifies them. Sure it may take a bit to learn them but so do a lot of other things. Even carpenters have a lot of tech stuff they can use because it's faster, cleaner, easier and more accurate.
Speaking of technology, I even got new lenses IN my eyes. I mean inserted in my eyeballs. Correct my astigmatism and severe nearsidedness. First time without glasses since I can remember. How cool is that. Couldn't be done not too long ago. Now I see 20/20 for distance and only need reading glasses.
Sure, you can live with very little technology but when Facebook, Linked In and other services have over 850 million users, it's kind hard to ignore it.
Kinda like not having a telephone when everyone else has one. Sure you can get calls at your neighbors house if they're kind people but it's doesn't make much sense when your trying to get a job and your neighbor's not home when the call comes in. My home also has a hard-wired alarm system. Now everything is wireless, video, internet based. Mine still works but I pay a service to monitor it. It'll probably get changed out soon enough.
Or not having a car when there is little public transportation. Or not having a washer and dryer at your home. Sure you can do it but how much time do you waste? We did this for a few weeks until we got a new set. Every Sat. or every other Saturday we hauled bags of dirty laundry to the laundromat and spent several hours washing and folding. Don''t miss it.
If you're smart enough to make a living without using current technology, great for you.
For the majority, it's a necessity. Sure the phones come with all kinds of extra stuff. Who cares. Hey, there were dozens of car builders when they they first came out. Time has a way of sorting things out.

Kinda with you. I do have an iPhone, but no tv at all - no cable, no pvr, nothing. I just can't stand tv, and I refuse to give my kids access to it. I prefer physical books, but mostly reading for work and research (academia), However, I am on my computer all the time, for work and fun, so I'm not anti-tech at all. Just turned 40 in January.
I am only 26 and I don't have a lot of the "cool" modern day gadgets out today. I just recently upgraded from a flip phone to a non-touch screen phone with the slide out keyboard, it does make texting a lot easier although I still often prefer to call people. My desktop computer is almost four years old and is stock, I still use my old school Walkman I bought back in the 90's. My main TV is a 32" LCD I bought back when LCD's and the whole HD craze was just getting big in the consumer market, however have numerous other CRT TV's I still use. The modern day gadgets are cool, however I guess I just live in the mind that if I am not "cool" because I don't have the iPhone 5 or whatever version it is up to now...then so be it.
